Inspiron 530s diagnosic test error on hdd: smart short self test - timed out

No your hard drive is just fine.

It sounds like a variant of the S.M.A.R.T. HDD virus. You can try to remove it with the software I list below, but if that doesn't get rid of it you will have to bring it in to a pc shop that speciallizes in virus/malware removal for a set price. Especially if it has started removing your icons already.

Start your PC and press F8 several times until the boot menu comes up. Then select "Safe Mode with Networking". Now get some or ALL of the FREE programs below.

First try malwarebytes anti-malware it's FREE and it's here:
Make sure to select the non-pro version.

Install and use TDSSKiller also (Also FREE):

You can try Superantispyware as well (Also FREE):

If you don't have a good anti-virus program already you can use Avira. It's FREE as well, just make sure to configure it to "Select All" Threat categories. Here it is:

Trying to reload Windows OS. Run into

From another computer build a msdos floppy disc, yes floppy disc.
I believe you computer accepts floppys does it not? and i also asume you are running xp, you can try running the startup disc and trying to check disc, but if you cannont procede, i would opt into downloading another copy of the windows and try installing through that method. If the disc dosent load, and you get that error message of the bat, another step will be waiting for you.

Dell Dimension 2400 What is Targeted Read Test WHD-20-2RQ and Smart Short Self Test WHD16-FTD and how do I fix it if it said they failed

These are results of two sections of Dell Diagnostics tests which can be run by pressing F10 at startup.

You would have to watch them run to see what has failed during the test.

From Targeted Read Test WHD-20-2RQ failed, could be failure to read RAM (memory), CD/DVD Drive, or Hard Drive.

Something failing within Smart Short Self Test WHD16-FTD could literally be anything within the computer, without seeing what has actually failed during the test.

Programs shut down at random

Have you checked in your case to see if all your fans are working? May be a heat problem in power supply, CPU. Get this software and install to check the actual temps on your motherboard.

This is the free program I use.

Four beeps wont turn on, Dell 4700

The four beeps usually indicate a memory problem and it won't pass it's Power On Self Test. Try reseating the memory sticks, or, if you have two of them, take one out and try to start the machine and then swap them.
If this doesn't solve the problem, you most likely have a bad motherboard.

Laptop help

yes, may be the hard drive... so goahead and run a test on hard drive....

try going to bios setup.... from the main menu in bios... highlight the hard drive... maybe displayed in first drive, or second drive...push Enter... and from the list select an option smart self test...
There would be two test's one is smart self test and smart extented self test... first select the smart self test... it would go up to 5 min... if it is pass go to second, smart extended would go upto an hour.

If first test fails... no need to run the second...directly replace the hdd... but if pass go to second.. and check the hard drive..

As you said you are using UBUNTU.... try install it again.. if hdd both test pass..
