Try to slide and hold the power switch for about five seconds, until after the power LED behind the power switch blinks three times.

My Kindle will not wake up when I slide and release my button to wake it up. I hve had this Kindle for several years. Is it time to purchase a new one. Arthur

Hello
If that did not work, let's try to force a reboot. If you have a leather cover on it, remove it. The battery charging circuits are controlled by the software as well. If the software isn't allowing the Kindle to accept a proper charge, it may cause the Kindle to malfunction too. Plug the Kindle into the charger for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes and while still plugged in, slide or press and hold the switch for one minute. Make sure you don't disconnect the power during this entire process. Allow 3 minutes afterward for the Kindle to reboot. If this doesn't correct the problem, let me know the approximate purchase date of your Kindle.

It will not power up. was on the charger most of the day.

To wake up or turn on your Kindle, slide and release the power switch again. If your Kindle does not power on or is unresponsive during use, try resetting the device by disconnecting your Kindle from any power source, and then sliding and holding the power switch for 15 seconds before releasing.

My Kindle Fire HD won't turn off. I was watching a movie on Netflix and the picture just froze

Turning Off the Kindle
Quickly sliding the power switch on the Kindle enters and resumes sleep mode. If your Kindle enters a non-responsive state when sliding the power switch, you've likely entered sleep mode. Try sliding the power switch and holding it for four seconds to shut down the device. If it still does not shut off, you may need to reset the Kindle.

Resetting the Kindle
The power switch also serves to reset the device. Before resetting the device, disconnect it from any power sources, such as an AC outlet or your computer's USB connection. Sliding the power switch and holding it for 20 seconds forces the Kindle to reset and power down. However, a nearly depleted battery may prevent this action. If the Kindle still doesn't shut off, try charging it for several hours and resetting it again.

On sleep mode, would not wake even if i slide the switch and hold it for 20 seconds.

The hard reset takes 45 seconds sliding the button, It also might have run out of battery which puts it into a mode that looks like sleep mode

My kindle will not start up even though it has battery charge. Is there a soft reboot?

Yes:
  1. Get a watch with a hand for the seconds.
  2. Slide and hold the power switch for 7 seconds. After about 5 seconds the power light flashes three times. After 7 seconds, the screen will go blank and the device is switched off now. Release the switch.
  3. Slide and hold the power switch for 15 seconds (no more, no less). Do not hold the switch too long, the time window for the reset is not very big.
  4. After releasing the switch just wait. The Kindle will reboot after a few seconds.
