Have you tried a new disc? have you tried your 5 year old disc's in an other recorder? you have to know that re-writable discs have a life... 5 years (I'd say the best is out of them) and so is a DVD recorder, the laser get weeker with time thus making the system harder to record, i've seen some system so old that they could ownly record on a new disc but could not erase/format them after they've been recorded on...

Good luck!

My toshiba dr4su will no longer record on dvd-rw discs nor will it format a blank or prerecorded dvd-rw.Ihave used this recorder successfully for a couple of years. It will play back dvd-rw. When I attempt...

If its an older recorder it could be the usual problem of a greasy center-disc =
95% OF THE TIMES I could fix a problem like this was by cleaning with rubbing alcohol the rubber ring on the little rotating disc in the center of the drive mechanism. !!!! Because users always stick their index finger into the hole of all the CD'S for inserting a disc into the tray that a tiny amount of grease gets deposited onto the little rotation disc which touches the center of any inserted disc at about half an inch from its center hole. (underneath) When its greasy the discs slide and the inserted discs speed stays uneven and slow.
You must open the drivebox ( after unplugging the power-cable) to see and clean it.
Be careful to not look at it with power "on" because the laser will make you go blind (danger!!!!!!!
I heavily use a Toshiba DVD recorder since 12 years and it is my most reliable and most versatile recorder, while my brand new Sony recorder lasted only 2 years - Others as well had problems with finalizing etc. but in general the cleaning of the little center-disc that pushes from underneath against an inserted DVD to make it spin helps the most.

I have an 'old' DMR-E55EB recorder with my latest two RAM discs suddenly being 'write protected' without me knowing why. Is there any way to make them work in a read, write, and erase way again? If...

Very strange, but not uncommon.

The DMR-E55 (and its variations) is a 2004 model DVD recorder, so it is over 5 years old. If you did not set write/record protection on those discs, then it is likely to be a defect within the recorder, which may require workshop attention. You can always submit the unit to an authorised service centre for a quote and second opinion, to get an idea of the likely cost(s) involved, if a fault is found, then make a decision afterwards. Up to you.

Alternatively, it might be a good idea to cease using DVD-RAM discs and use DVD-RW/+RW discs instead if the unit accepts these as a recording format (or change brand of disc), and you intend to record more than once per disc. Or you could try the same discs in your PC if it has a DVD burner which is capable of reading/writing RAM discs as well as all other formats. If that works, the discs are OK.

If this does not work, then your only other option is to take the recorder to a workshop and have a qualified technician examine it thoroughly; but be warned - it may be expensive if you decide to do so. I hope it is nothing too serious.

How do i rewrite over a disc that is full

If you are using a DVD-RW or DVD+RW, you can format the disc by performing "Format". You can format DVD-RW for either video mode recording or VR mode recording. DVD+RW can be format in order to erase all content of the disc.
You may not be able to reformat a disc that is not previously formatted by your recorder an example would be a. DVD disc formatted by PC or another recorder.
Follow these steps to re-write:
Insert a recordable disc.
1 Press [SETUP].
2 Select "DVD Menu",
then press [ENTER].
3 Then select "Format", and
press [ENTER].
4 select "Start", then
press [ENTER].
5 Confirm by selecting "Yes", then press
[ENTER].
Formatting will start.
6 Formatting is completed.
When the disc is ready for you to rewrite to "100%" is indicated.
Formatting 100%

Magnavox DVD recorder...finalizing problem

The manual isn't too helpful either - "Recording error other than below," it says. There are a couple of possibilities. The Philips/Magnavox/Funai recorders automatically record in VR mode when you use +R discs (there are two possible recording modes - V Mode and VR Mode). Is it possible that you have switched disc types lately? If you are currently using -R discs, switch to +R and vice versa. The manual states that +/-RW discs take a while to initialize.

I couldn't find a full factory reset on that one, so you may have to unplug the unit for about 20 minutes to restore all the defaults.

Another possibility: Finalization requires some extra space on the disc. If you accidentally pressed the button that changes the recording format between SP, EP, LP, etc., you may not be able to fit the same amount of video on the disc that you were able to fit before. You can change the format by pressing the Disc Mode button on the remote - LP Mode will fit 3 hours worth of recordings onto a 2-hr disc and is considered a "medium quality" recording. Try changing the Disc Mode to LP and see if it will finalize the next disc that you record. The downside of this possibility is that the discs that you have already made that are giving you errors are not "fixable" - you will will have to re-record the shows to a new disc in LP mode.

Good luck!

Says blank DVD-RW is not formatted, then formats -- then error

I have same TOSHIBA D-VR4XSU VCR/DVD RECORDER. According to the
manual, you (COULD) can use for recording: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R (see page 50). WRONG!!! I bought all 3 types of discs, but after few
weeks I got same experience you got now. Just type DVD-R works. The other
types were - wasted money and a lot of time trying to finalize the disc. I had to
throw all into the garbage. Try DVD-R and you should?? be O.K.

DVD-R OR DVD+R

Hey asigler,

The primary differences between DVD-R and DVD+R format discs may not necessarily be noticeable by the average consumer, as they are mostly in regards to how the discs are written and read by DVD recorders.

DVD+R format discs do tend on average to have a slightly smaller storage capacity than DVD-R discs (4.7GB versus 4.71GB). Additionally DVD+R discs can be somewhat easier to use when creating multiple sessions or multiple copies of the same material, since the format uses what is typically considered to be a "more robust" error management system when writing and copying files. However, because the introduction of DVD-R media came roughly 5 years before DVD+R, the DVD-R format has the advantage of being compatible with a wider variety of electronics.

As a result, there is a good chance that your DVD recorder may only support the use of DVD-R format discs, but you should always refer to your owner's manual documentation for confirmation.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
