Question about Samsung Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Drive seems to be spinning (can feel this by holding the HDD). Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Mac OS does not recognise it. Is it a problem due to it being a USB interface - would it need a bit more power to access the files? Does not make sense for the drive to be on but no access to the files!

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty

XP is a dead OS.
100% dead. and not supported now. by MS or HP.
but XP needs SP3, or USB will be bad
XP always had bad USB for years until , all patches were done.
The USB on XP are horrible.
you need good USB so all devices are PnP recognized
and negotiated currents (power) is working
and USB2 currents are weaker than USB 3.

Having a problem with an external HDD. Although it is getting power - any OS cannot seem to pick up the HDD. This means I cannot access any of my files. It is a Samsung G2 Portable HDD.

Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the computer to detect a USB device when it's plugged in. Try rebooting the computer while the external hard drive is connected and powered. Then wait a few minutes before we start worrying. The last resort is to contact Samsung and tell them their product is defective - they might have a fix.

I cannot find a driver or SW package for Windows 7.

I have the same problem. This is what Tripp Lite told me: "We have tested the existing drivers for the US-4A on both Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.2. Neither Windows7 nor Mac OS 10.6.2 functioned with the USB server products (US-4A and U2S-2A) while utilizing current drivers. I suspect that this is due to the fact that both OS' appear to have undertaken a major overhaul over their prior counterparts (XP, Vista, 10.5.X). In order for functionality to exist between the operating systems (in this case Win 7 and Mac OS 10.6.X) new drivers would need to be released. At this point, there is no plan to move forward with drivers to accommodate these operating systems."

I told them I was not impressed and that this lack of support would affect any future purchases of thier products.

Toshiba 500 GB External Hard drive cant be detected by windows xp

yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine

Windows 7 Evaluation HDD Issue

First yes 7 is basically a toned down version of vista.

Its very hard to determine many problems you may be experiencing with 7 due to the fact that its not even offical yet, but only a beta. This means most drivers with have bugs, like your hard drive spinning up and down at random certain point.

I would advise to test the drive in the same conditions with either XP or vista.

As of the life of the drive, unless its making constant noises that scare the hell out of you alot or most of the time, than its just fine.

Hope this helped.

You don' t say what OS or even type of computer (PC, Mac, Windows XP, 98, vista etc) you are running, or whether the drive has been used before. If it's a new drive then it probably needs formatting, so you can allow the OS to do that. If it contains data that you need then DO NOT allow the OS to format it.

If you know it is formatted & contains data, then it sounds like the OS is not recognising the format. Windows 98 typically won't recognise NTFS disks formatted on Windows XP for example or Linux Ext3/4 format disks won't be recognised by Windows. In the latter case, you can download a free driver which will do that for you - google Ext 4 and Windows.
