Question about Mitsubishi VS-60601 60" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

1997 VS-60601 has worked great for 13 years. Lately, when I turn it on, I get sound but no picture. For the first few seconds, the screen is black except, periodically, wavy lines of color, RGB it looks like, quickly fly down the screen. The, after perhaps a minute, the screen comes on and looks great, as usual. Does anyone know what is going on? What, if any, parts I need to fix it? How do I fix it? How long do I have before the screen goes out completely?

Your tv is a projection tv that uses CRT technology - the image is generated by 3 small standard tv tubes. Because of that the news aren't good: what you describe is typical of a missing synchro signal - the main processor/circuit of the tv can't synchronize the internal oscillators to the signal of the broadcasted channel. This happens only when the discriminator (the part that is supposed to detect the difference and send a correcting signal) is malfunctioning. Since this happens only at start, when the parts are cold, it means that this is caused by the aging of the parts.
The only way to fix that is to replace the aged parts - practically you would have to replace all the capacitors and a great part of the resistors, efectively rebuilding the tv. But this isn't the really bad news, this is: because the tv functions out of sync for a substantial amount of time the deflection modules - especially the horizontal one, where the high tension is generated - is subjected to high stresses so it can fail at any time. When that will happen the tv will be effectively dead and repairing it would cost you a lot - at least $500.
My advice to you: accept that this tv is on its last legs, pray that it lasts longer and in between start saving for a new one - at 13 years it has had an exceptionally long life, i doubt that any one you will buy after it will last half of that.

Mitsubishi VS-60601 has a distorted picture with double vision even if it's a DVD playing. The sides of the screen get narrower in the center of the sides when it's turned on. I'm mechanically inclined and...

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

VS60601 Picture yesterday, none today

That model will usually leak coolant directly onto the vertical output area and that will put the tubes into protective blanking and you will have sound but no picture.

VS-60601 Mitsubishi Problem...

That model is famous for the CRts leaking onto the chassis which causes all kinds of problems and can cause the main circuit board to short as well as destroy the solder. Try looking at the board for evidence of a pastey substance that would indicate CRT coolant leakage. Let me know what you find.

You need to change the convergence IC's my friend. If you know how to solder and work on printed circuit boards, this is an easy repair, BUT if you have no experience, play it safe and let a pro do this repair for you. Good Luck

Green color lost

First thing to check my friend is bad connections on the green CRT board, or cannections on the green crt and the socket. If there are no bad connections on the board, but to tell you the truth there most likely is, as I have found this problem many many times in the past, you could take off the green crt board and swap it with one of the other board from the other two crts and the picturew will not be right, but this will tell you if the problem is on the green board or the green driver circuit. if the green continues to go out on this setup, then I would tend to believe that the green CRT is intermittant. Good Luck

Mitsubishi VS-5041 50 Inch Rear Prorjection TV No image but there is sound!

After 11 years???? OMG This set is a tired pup and should be put to reast. My experience with older sets and your complains are all capacitor problems and is only gonna get worse as the first time around repair will take several capacitors to repair. This set has no user serviceable parts inside so you should not attempt a repair suchj as this on your own.. This repair if you decide to go through the first time will be About 300 to 600 bucks the first time and cost will continue to raise till the sets put to sleep. Good luck
