Run a load of whites (or with no clothes) with bleach to kill any mildew or bacteria build-up in the washer. If you have your own well, install an anti-bacterial and odor removal filter in the water line.

The first time you wash towels after doing this, pre-soak the towels in water with a "color-safe" bleach to get any little stinkers hiding in them. Also, disinfect your towel storage and any place where they are hung after use, and after that make sure the towels are dried out before they are thrown into the laundry basket unless they are going to the washing machine immediately.

Tip

HE Front loaders only - Prevent clogging and stop towels from stinking. Green...

First and foremost, stop using all liquid detergents. Switch to a powdered HE detergent. The liquid HE detergents build up in the washers drain and sit there and will catch everything. The buildup is due to a lack of rinsing power to effectively move the mass and will become really funky as a result. This buildup will burp and backwash into your washer causing your towels to stink horribly at first and then other clothing. If you're experiencing this and you can smell the funk in your washer when you open it, you can fix this efficiently and on the cheap. Buy citric acid, which comes from fruits and is completely safe for the environment. You can purchase small amounts at your grocery store or check Amazon for bulk, also see the link below. Just use 2 tablespoons and set your machine to the hottest setting and longest cycle. Do this once a week until you don't smell anything in the washer and your laundry. Be sure you switch to the powdered HE detergent as the powered detergents break down more effectively and do not clog your washers drain. http://www.chemistrystore.com/Chemicals_A-F-Citric_Acid.html

Smelly towels

Be sure your using HE Laundry Detergent, only use the recommended amount on the bottle, I use the liquid, the less the better, I use the least amount.....To much soap left in clothes can cause mildew and stinky smell, also I recommend using a fabric softner, it helps to remove the soap....and smells good....also use a good washer cleaner, I use Affresh, they come in tablets, go to www.affresh.com and put in you zipcode to find where you can purchase it in you area......make sure after a load is finished that it doesn't sit in the tub with the lid down for long, removing the laundry promptly will also help with stinky laundry........use the Affresh at least once a month.......hope this helps you

Our towels and clothes have a mildew/musty smell. when I spin the stainless drum inside, i can hear water sloshing around.

Towel mildew odor is transferred from the washer to towels and clothes. The washer must be cleaned first. After cleaning the washer and towels washing habits must change to stop mold smell from returning.

Washing machine mold / mildew is caused by:
#1 cause is overuse of detergents. Detergent companies are notorious for instructing to use too much detergent. Especially with soft water or when using liquid detergent no more than 1 tbsp of any detergent should be used.
#2 most common cause is using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle and will coat the inside of the outer tub with residue that is a food source for mold to grow.
#3 using only cold water for washing is fine but makes preventative maintenance very important. A weekly hot soak will dissolve odor-causing residue from inside your washer.
#4 not using the washer. If the clothes washer isn't used very often maintenance is especially important. If leaving for a vacation it's a good idea to clean your washer. Do a search to "remove washer odor" to read just how big the problem is. There are all natural washer cleaners that will also remove mildew odor from towels and clothing after the washer has been cleaned.

Towels smell oily and moldy--really stink

Don't use fabric softener. I had the same problem and read somewhere to stop using the fabric softeners. I don't know why but after about two cycles (they smelled really bad) it worked! I always used fabric softeners with out a problem but one day I just started getting REALLY smelly towels. I always take my wet wash out as soon as the cycle ends and dry it completely so I was surprised when they smalled so bad. Give it a try.

Mildew smell on cloths

The brand of your front loader is not that material on this issue. What is happening is that your old top load washer may have used as much as 45 gallons of water per cycle, while some front loaders use as little as 12. Because of the low water use, you must cut back on the additives you are using. Use only 1 tablespoon of HE detergent (even less if 2x or 3x detergent) per load. If you use fabric softener, use only 1 teaspoon per load. Odor on clothes after wash is indicating that the detergent and or softener has not been fully rinsed out. If you throw a load of washed towels into your machine and start a cycle without any soap, then stop the cycle, you should not see any suds. If you do, there is obviously soap left in the clothes. With bath towels, the towels are used to absorb clean water off a clean body. They do not need soap when you wash them, and never use fabric softener on towels.
If your washer is a LG WM-1832 it has a assessable filter behind the access door on the lower left front of the machine. Clean that out first, and if it has a tub clean or sanitary cycle use that cycle (if not, use hottest longest cycle available) with 3 Affresh tablets or use whirlaway to clean out the washer outer tub (the not visible tub that holds the water). You might want to use another cycle like that with bleach to head off mold or mildew growth. Use of proper amount of detergent and fabric softener should really help the clothes odor issue from then on. Also check the tub seal at the bottom of the door area to clean out any lint from drain hole areas to help prevent water from remaining in the tub seal area.

Disgusting odor

I had the same problem, except it wasn't just towels. It was everything. I did some research and found that this is a common problem and nothing a tech can fix. I was about to go out this weekend and spend $1000 on a new washer because I couldn't use this washer on my clothes anymore. I did one more search for a solution and THANK GOODNESS found a solution on another site. A woman had the same problem and, after much trouble, someone at Best Buy finally told her to never use liquid detergent in the machine, not even HE. So I cleaned the inside of my machine, around the door, the rubber seal, etc. I ran the tub clean cycle with bleach and vinegar. The smell was gone and I have been using powder Tide ever since, and the smell hasn't come back!!!!!
