Having a problem with an external HDD. Although it is getting power - any OS cannot seem to pick up the HDD. This means I cannot access any of my files. It is a Samsung G2 Portable HDD.

Couple of things you could try:
1.) Try a replacement cable and see if that allows communication

2.) Right Click MY COMPUTER
Select MANAGE
Click on DISC MANAGEMENT
IF you can see the drive then right click and change drive letter and path
Select a different letter and click OK

Exit and see if windows now picks up the drive. Sometimes windows cannot recognise the drive until it is given a different letter

Finally, feel the drive as its plugged in, can you feel any vibration that suggest the drive is spinning. If not, there may be an internal fault wth the drive.

Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the computer to detect a USB device when it's plugged in. Try rebooting the computer while the external hard drive is connected and powered. Then wait a few minutes before we start worrying. The last resort is to contact Samsung and tell them their product is defective - they might have a fix.

I tried to re install the operating system but a blue screen error appear when trying to load. Any solution?

Here is what I recommend format the HDD with a PC, remove your laptop HDD and put it into a external case unless you habe the capability to hook it up directly to your PC motherboard you will have to turn your PC off to do it this way or your PC won't see it, either way you can format the drive with dik management. You can pick up a external shell for $10.00. Whats seems to me is happening is that when you reload the OS the HDD is trying to write the OS back where the exsisting one is. The only way to get a clean install is to wipe the HDD clean with a reformat. Make sure you save any wanted datt on an external storage drive.

Sometimes when an external device has an unexpected loss of power, the computer has trouble accessing the drive after power has been restored. In Device Manager, try re-assigning the drive to anoter letter. What can happen is the computer has reserved a spot for the external although it is having difficulty accessing it. If you're able to re-assign the external drive, you should be able to access it.
p.s. this is very common with external drives formatted in FAT.

every motherboard should have a led light always on to indicate that there if power in it. the problem with system rebooting has to do with the ram or processor, since you said it does not recognize the hdd at times that means that the ram is working abnormally i.e it is week, u know ram means random access memory, so change the ram and make sure u get the right ram for your system

Hi,
After plugging ur HDD, verify the device is detected or not in Device manager and Try Partitioning Again GUI mode (means in XP).. or follow the steps..

1- Go to Computer Management, Click Disk Management
2 - You will find you External HDD in the Right side
3 - Just Right Click the Drive, if it asks Initialize HDD, just Initialize and Create Partition as u like.

External hard drive does not display icon in My Computer

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this data recovery program to recover your files.

Unable to install IOMEGA HDD on Vista Home Premium

Vista may require drivers that are not preinstalled. If the drive clearly works on one machine, but not another, its safe to pressume its not the drive. On the VISTA machine, go to the Iomega site and download the driver for vista or usb or whatnot.
