Question about Sony VAIO Digital Studio PCV-RZ24G PC Desktop

1 Answer

Ran out of disk space on my Vaio desktop PCV-RZ24G. 120 gig drive but c formatted to 19 gig. purchased a WD 250 gig and did a disk clone. installed in pc and at first power on it stops at no boot device found. I did an alt-ctl-del and got into bios. set boot devices and primary boot devices. did a save and exit. System booted to xp fine. I powered down the system and turned back on. Same issue no boot device found. Did and alt-ctl-del and it found boot device. Seems to be a timing issue with the sony bios. If I just power on and f2 to bios there is nothing shown for the primary boot device. If I alt-ctl-del then f2 to bios I see the drive correctly. Is there a bios fix or some kind of work around for this? thanks

This is what I disliked about the "Sony hard drive partitioning plan" - they don't give you all of the C partition and then you run out of space. Out of frustration, I formatted the entire hard drive so that no remnants of Sony was in it and installed a fresh copy of the operating system, used the product key from the original operating system, sticker (label) affixed on the case to active Windows again. I got the entire C partition all to myself! Since you cloned that hard drive, you still have the "Sony hard drive partitioning plan".

Thanks but I was running out of space on c and d so was best to just clone a bigger drive. I used a partition application to split the drive based on current and future needs. The C partition is not 90 gig and the D is 160 gig. This will work fine. I still have the no boot device issue. Its strange. Its as if the new drive takes to long to spin up and the bios has completted checking for boot devices before the drive is ready. I don't see any BIOS updates for this model ether. Just have to keep working at it. I will format off the old 120 gig and add it back to the system as the e drive. This should give me a couple more years before I upgrade the system. Thats all I need for now. If I do get another VAIO I will upgrade and reload the day I get it.

On my Sony PCV-RZ26G computer I recently installed a 500GB hard drive. With windows XP installed (SP2 or 3) the system fails to find the drive on a cold start resulting in a "Disk Boot Failure"...

try installing afresh from scratch.....
dont clone
try use a smaller partition for C (say 60 - 80GB)
boot from the XP disk(change boot seq in BIOS to boot from CDROM)
and install fresh copy....

Need 2nd hard drive for sony pcv-rz24g

You need a ATA-100 (EIDE) 3.5" hard drive. Then you need the jumper set to slave or cable select (if you have the two drives on one cable and the original drive as the master). See your manual for details on the procedure. You need to open the case, remove the cables from the original drive and lift the drive holder out of the case to insert the second drive. The manual is available here: (see page 44 (57 as the pdf reads) and on) . Then slide the case into place and connect the power and data cables to both drives. Then go to the drive management to format the new drive and prepare it for use.

For XP, go to My Computer, then Manage. Then Select Storage and Disk Management. Then select the new disc for formating.

I hope this helps.

Replacing a hard drive on Sony PCV-RX550 with a Western Digital 320 gig. With the orig disc as primary master, the wd drive is recognized by the bios as secondary master. But when I remove the original...

if you want to connect two hard drive together then remove the jumper of the primary hard drive and don't touch the setting of the secondary drive then start the system.always make primary drive which have the os.

320 GB drive for PCXV RX560

i've personally ran into this once before with a gateway system and a WD drive. Have you tried another high capacity drive from a different manufacturer? Sometimes there are simply compatibility issues with some drives and boards. Also (even though i'm certain this isn't the case) sometimes when you do a direct clone you clone over information that is located on a bad sector from the original drive. you may want to consider running a hdd regeneration tool before doing a clone. This software can be found on Hiren's boot cd which is a free resource that i use daily. Not related to this particular issue i'm fairly certain but a good tip for the future.

hope this helps.

Memory to low on c drive message pops up even after I transferred most of my files to d drive

Are you referring to the virtual memory or just disk space? Assuming you are on Windows, even after transferring files, the space might not be enough. You can change the pagefile size (virtual memory) or just transfer enough files and even move your temp directory to D. That way the partition/drive with OS will have enough space. Now a days keep at least one gig free there. It usually starts complaining when it gets close to 500 MB.

WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

You should partition your new drive first to say 160Gb (you lose a bit after formatting) for 1st partition and the remaining capacity for the 2nd partition. Because your Ghost image is 120Gb it can only restore to a partition of 120Gb, that is why it shows 120Gb on a 500Gb on a single partition.
You may be able to fix this problem without starting again by using Disk Manager (from Control Panel - Admoinistrative Tools) to create a 2nd partition on the hard drive and format this partition.
