From what you describe, it has saved the notebook from shorting out but the keyboard is damaged. I suggest the best option is to firstly remove the keyboard and clean any residue off the underside and key contacts with isopropol alcohol or at a pinch, meths. My experience however is that this works only rarely and you will need to get a new keyboard. Ebay often has some of these quite cheaply
