This is most likely caused by a damaged or misaligned video drum and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

Recording and Playback error

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I am having the same probelms, and I would appreciate any help with this since I am shooting a childrens camp and I am fairly isolated and don't have the time to swop cameras or send it to get fixed. I need to know if the recording is fine (video and audio) but the playback is not working correctly...or is it not recording correctly or playing back correctly. The sound cuts out from time to time in playback. Thank you.

Issue I believe with the Horizontal Synch

Hi this problem sounds like the tape was damaged somehow maybe faulty when you brought it because if you had no problems using a different tape then that rules out the head been damaged inside the video so i would say the tape was faulty.
Also you are right they dont make videos anymore and eventually wont be able to buy blank tapes the best format that you should invest in is a camcorder that takes memory cards these can hold alot more than the tapes can and the quality is 100 times better and less likely to fail on you also you can store everything on your computer and then transfer to dvd.
Let me know if this answered you question or if you need further assistance ok

How to Safely Clean a Tape Video Head

If you are not getting video from a VCR, 8MM camcorder, or Digital Video recorder camcorder but get audio, do the following:
1. Use a brand new tape - right out of the package and insert it into the drive.
2. Perform a record on the tape - set it to do a RECORD (not playback).
3. Allow it to complete through the entire tape without stopping.
4. Upon completion - allow it to rewind.
5. Insert a known good prerecorded tape and play - observe the image. If it's good, then the head was just dirty and is now clean.
You may perform the above as often as necessary without any damage to the device.

Picture and sound is skipping or stuttering during playback. It happens when playing any video.

This was often caused by mixing brands of tape. Do not use head cleaners more than absolutely necessary. More than half a dozen times or so, and heads are toast.

Use quality tapes of the same make/length, from new, and you will be fine. (the coatings on the tapes vary, and can/did interact with each other.)

Playback Problems

Ditto. Old tapes seem to be related to the problem. All I have to do is put in a new tape, play it, remove it, put the old one back in and it will play normally again. I can't explain why. I know the camera has an automatic tape detection feature and I wonder if it is at fault. Perhaps the camera has trouble detecting older tapes and the brains get scrambled. A new tape resets the detector. It's just a guess.
