Question about Sega Genesis Console

1 Answer

My genesis only gives me a black screen when I turn it on. I have the game in there, and it's clean. I have look inside, though, and that does need cleaning. How do you suggest I do so?

SOURCE: Sega Genesis not showing a picture

As I had just a similar problem with my MegaDrive/Genesis maybe this helps: Try an older TV set. I am not joking. It might very well be the case that newer TV sets/high-end TV systems can't handle the signals of the older video game systems. I have a 100 hz TV set and whereas there are no problems with a SNES, with the MegaDrive I just had a black and white screen with bars running through it. On a 60 Hz TV set this problem does not occur. Keep in mind that there were no 100 hz/HDTV sets around when these video game systems were in general use.

Have you tried a different TV set? this would narrow down your problem to either the TV or the console.
If you think it's the TV try unplugging all other inputs - unplug the aerial, DVD player etc and see if this makes the difference. (don't forget where all the cables go afterwards!)
If you're really stuck but own a computer, you are legally allowed to download an 'emulator' which turns your computer into a Genesis.
Then you can search the internet for 'ROMs'. These are files that the emulator can read like a cartrage.
Note you are only allowed to download ROMs of games you already own. Downloading other ROMs is illegal in most countries. Also be careful for viruses, some of the sites out there are a little dodgy.
I know this doesn't fix your problem but might offer an alternative solution.

My Sega Genesis turns on and the screen turns black but no picture. Any suggestions?

You may have a dirty cartridge in your hands, try cleaning the contacts with rubbing alcohol, use a cute tip and let dry, then try again. If still problem persist try to clean the console itself following the same procedure, best of luck.

When I turn on my Sega Genesis, a black screen appears on the TV and nothing else happens. It shows nothing but a black screen. When you turn on the console you can hear it try to start with no success.

Well try cleaning the game packs out with quips and rubbing alchal the game packs could just be dirty then I had a problem with my sega it would just show a black screen when I turned it on so I cleaned out the game packs and it was fine after that the worst case is that your sega is on its way out let's hope not but lukie games sells sega products too.

I recently plugged in my Sega Genesis (MK-1601) console and purchased A/V cords to hook to my tv. When I turn the power on (the red light goes on), I usually just get a flash across the screen and then a...

This is pretty common. The games just need a good Q-Tip cleaning, and then the weird clean pencil-eraser rubbing.
Get out a Q-Tip, and rub it inside the game, on the copper part (The part you stick down into the system.). Keep doing this with new Q-Tips if the old ones get soiled with black stuff. After the new Q-Tip comes out white, it should work.
Sometimes, that isn't enough. Use some Windex or any other rubbing alcohol, dip it onto a Q-Tip, and rub it onto the copper part. Then, use a dry Q-Tip to dry it off, and let it sit out of it's case and out of the system for about 20 minutes so that the alcohol dries.
If that doesn't work, use a pencil with a clean pink eraser at the tip. Rub it inside the game, and use a Q-Tip to get all of the eraser shavings out. This breaks the electro-static cling/friction made when the game is being read by the system.
And if none of that works, go on Amazon or Ebay or to the store Slackers and get new video and AC wires for the Genesis. Sometimes that's all it needs!
I really hope this helps!

Sega genesis isnt working...

Have you cleaned the Sega? What I mean is where the casset game goes. Push down the little flap, and there should be a little strip with contacts on the inside. Just clean it with a cotton swab and alcohol. And also, clean all your games also the same way.

Hope this helps.

Problem with the 1st generation sega genesis

If the screen changes (From snow to black or something) when the console is turned on it sound like the console is partially working. Try cleaning the Cardridge pins que tip and some sort of cleaning fluid.

Once this is done insert and eject the cartridge several times then repeat the cleaning process on the cartridge. Hope this helps.
