When I try to put the garage door down, it will travel for 1-2 seconds. then it will stop, the unit will make 10 or so "clicking" noises that sound like a car blinker, and it doesn't close.

Check the sensors in the doorway. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them a bit. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have bad sensors.

thanks...i tried to check both sensors. one is solid orange and the other is solid green. does the light color tell you which one is defective?

No the color doesn't matter. Look real closely and make sure one of them isn't blinking ever so slightly. One other thing is to make sure the sun isn't shining on the lens of one of them. Try shading them. Now if this were the problem it would only show up in the daytime. I feel silly even mentioning that but I don't know how long you have had this problem.Even though both lights are on, tweak them a bit.

Can the unit overheat from over use. I was adjusting travel when the door stopped and the drive unit just clicked when trying to operate from the controls. Waited 10 minutes and opener worked ok.

Most garage openers are designed to open and close the door occasionally, not to run the motor continuously.

There likely is an overheat sensor that shuts power off if the motor gets too hot.

Garage Door Opener Will Open But Not Close

Your machine is jammed, meaning the carriage part or trolley that has the swingarm attached to the door has went further then it,s limit! your trolley that has the chain or belt connected to it may be jammed against the stop bolt that is just before the powerhead of your opener. In order to get it to operate again you must loosen the chain and take some tension off of it , you should also remove the stop bolt at this point sine a loose chain can add an extra inch or two to the travel limit when the door is coming up or going down . Once the bolt is removed your garage door opener should work again , be shure to retighten the chain after removing the stop bolt and check your travel limits in the up and down position! Hope this helps you in getting it to work again! Glenn

When I try to close my garage door --4100 model-- the door travels part way down, then reverses and goes to the up position. I can force it closed by keeping the garage door wall switch continually...

No matter when i adjust the force the door goes down, stops briefely, them returns to open position. can't get force adjust to let it stay down.

If the door is hitting the floor and then reversing it is traveling too far in the down direction. Locate the 'down limit' on the side of the motor unit and turn it in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking of this control will be necessary to get the travel just right. The force adjustment affects the safety of your opener. Try to put it back where it was.

Liftmaster 1/3hp garage door opener

When i try opening the garage door from the wall button the door only opens 3 inches or so, then stop but makes several loud clicking noises. I've played around with the travel limits as well as the open force switch but the same thing keeps happening. Any suggestions?

Chamberlain 1/2 HP garage opener main part 41A5389-1 will not close door. Motor stops about 1 ft into travel on screw. Nothing blocking door - can easily open and close door manually. What to do?

If the main light flashes 10 times you have a door sensor problem. Make sure the small light on each sensor is on and not flashing. Tweak them if necessary. If the main light does not flash then you can try increasing the down force just a bit. This is a control on the side of the motor unit where the small gray antenna hangs. If this doesn't work you probably have a bad IR sensor which is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.

Not working

IT MAY BE AGAINST THE TRAVEL LIMITER BOLT.

IF IT IS YOU WILL NEED TO UNPLUG THE UNIT REMOVE THE COVER AND TURN THE MOTOR BY HAND TO BACK OFF THE PRESSURE.

MAKE SURE YOU GO PAST THE LIMIT SWITCH.
ADJUST THE LIMIT SO TH DOOR DOES NOT HIT THE BOLT.

HOPE THIS HELPS
