Question about Verbatim Acclaim 750GB Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Open Question

Hooked up my portable hard drive (750GB Acclaim) no problems except my computer would not let me register it (I tried to change my norton settings but nothing I did worked). I installed all the nero and usb turbo stuff and backed up all my filles using nero and also dragged my folders to the hard drive too. My computer kept giving me warnings about low disc space so I removed the nero/turbo stuff thinking I could just re-install after I did a whole system reboot of my computer and get rid of a lot of stuff I don't need - (I don't know what files I need and which I don't so I was thinking doing a whole system restart would be the way to go). Only problem is my computer won't read the portable drive when I plug it in. I went through some steps that my computer took me through and used device manager to locate the drive and it prompted me to remove it - I did but it didn't help.) Sent Verbatim an email but wonder if there is a speedier way of getting help.

You have to partition your Verbatim Drive to work on a Mac. Go to Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. When in Disk Utility select the 232.9 GB SAMSUNG HM250HI Media to the left.

This happens when there is a disconnect of the usb interface or if the drive stops spinning. You either have a failing hard drive a failing usb enclosure or a usb issue with your computer. First thing is to plug the drive in to another computer to determine if this is a usb issue. If the problem persists then it is the circuitry in the enclosure or the hard drive. You may be able to install the drive into a new enclosure and if it works that was the problem, if not than you have a failing hard drive.

I have a 320 gb acclaim portable hard drive. My mac doesn't read it, the first time I plugged it the lap asked me if I wished to format it and I said yes. Now it doesn't read it, what can I

You formatted the hard drive on your laptop in NTFS and the MAC cannot read and write to this formatted NTFS hard drive.
THE FIX
Format the hard drive using your laptop BUT this time format it in FAT32.
The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk, so now you can exchange data between the MAC and the Windows laptop.

Make sure that you are connected to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub. Also try a different port on your computer. It is unlikely that two hard drives would be bad, but I would try them on another computer. Thanks for using fixya

I canĀ“t see the portable hard drive unit in my pc

First, try to connect it to a different computer, to see if it can be read on _any_ computer at all.

Second, check the warranty-status of the unit; if the warranty still is valid, Verbatim will replace the hardware (but will NOT make any attempts to 'recover' your files).

Third, an external drive has two major components -- the disk-drive and the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if that interface hardware is the problem.
