This generally indicates a phone line tha is dead. It may have timed out because a phone on the line has been left or knocked "off-hook". If so hangup the offending phone. In a short time the problem will self-correct. Beyond that, unplug ALL the phone appliences ( Fax,Computer, phones) Then, after waiting about 5min plug in 1 phone to see if it works. If that worked, re plug in the remaining items 1 at a time checking that the phone still works. If it quits, the last item you plugged in is likely causing the trouble.If the phone did not work, then go to the demarcation test box(ouside where the phone line comes in) open the portion which does NOT have the tamper proof screw. Unplug the short jumper wire and plug in a telephone. If the phone works there, the incoming phone service is ok, if it doesn't work call for service. If callers have complained tha you seem to pick up then immediately hang up, clean accumulated dust from jacks that are on outside walls particularly any near humidfiers tha may have caused the dust to become conductive. (a vacume cleaner should work) PS look for chewed cords (cats, dogs)

There could have been a short or ground in the telephone line (Tip and Ring). Please check the connection of the Tel line cord in the junction box. If your Tel line consist of 3 wires, disconnect all three wires, lift the handset, connect only 2 wires going to Exch Line or Trunk line (Local Tel Company) until you hear the dial tone. Leave the other wire disconnected.
This helped me isolate the problem, I hope this applies to you.

Tel/Fax/Answering machine keeps freezing


Dear mariss34

While receiving a fax you shouldnt pick up the handset, but if u pick accidently then u will not recieve fax and hence u will hear an engage tone. If you are using a single line for both tel and fax then the party who is sending the fax should pre-inform you that it is a fax call so that when it rings you dont pivk up the handset.

You can also check your line weather it is working properly by using a normal telephone. This should be the first step rather, make calls to confirm it.

The last option is Power off the tel/fax machine for 3min completely and then try again.Also make sure the tel/fax is in tel mode and not in fax mode. Try to assign it in both modes.

If still you are not clear then the mannual which comes along with should help you, If still you cannot figure it out, Then you can call your service provider for help, they should definetely help you out.

"Check Tel Line": Do I need a new phone?


theres some thing wrong with the base unit, try unplugging it and plugging the whole setup at a friends or something, also if youhave a DSL line you my have to install a filter to seperate the data line and voice line. Its ole school but this might work.

Panasonic phone says check tel line


Check cable conections from phone box on wall to base unit, make sure that the conectors are fully inserted. If possible plug a different phone into box to make sure that line is working. Hope this helps

I had the same message. After a length investigation, I found it was the phone line and not the phone. After having the phone line fixed, the phone worked fined.

What you need to do first of all , put of the phone then disconnect it from the power supply allow he phone for about five minute ,then put it on again check the phone respond on your command if the problem remain same or solve.

Note if the problem remain then you will need to send me the name and the mode /serial number of the phone to guide you further.

My panasonic panafax uf-890 has three ports on it's leftside and they are labeled "line" "telephone" and "handset". For faxing proposes, which port should I have plugged-in?


The "line" port is for the telephone line you intend to use for faxing.
The "Tel" port is for an external telephone to be plugged in.
The "Handset" port is for the hanset which may or may not have come with the fax machine.

You can remove your telephone line from the base unit and fix it to stranded telephone unit and hear the dial tone.If it heard then some inductor or else part may be broken inside the base unit due high current surge.If the dial tone didn't heard from the other phone also check for the corroded line cord or modular box fault with the tel line.There should be 30 Volt-50Volt D.C.Voltage at your wire ends.
