Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

I have a chain based Craftsman 1/2 horse power opener. It is 13 years old and i have replace the nylon gear a few years ago. I have the common problem of it not working when it gets below 20 degrees. The sensors seem to be the problem however I don't want to believe it. Sometimes the door will work in the cold and sometimes not. There are times when the sensors are always green and sometimes not. So that means the door will close normally even though the sensor is blocked. During this time both sensors are green even when the sensors are blocked. When the door will not close it is not friction/lubrication issue with the door. I say this because when the door is disengaged it will not close. What is the normal life of a garage door opener? I am trying to decide if I should buy a new opener or just the sensors.

The normal life of an opener is 10 years. Your problem sounds like a bad logic board which is about 2/3 the cost of a new opener.

If it is not blinking when it stops, then the capacitor is blown. Replace the capacitor and it should resolve the problem.

The nylon drive gear on Craftsman Garage Door keep stripping

The most common reason for this is a door that is too heavy. Release the door from the opener and lift it by hand. If it is heavy to you it is heavy for the opener. Be sure after replacing the gear to lubricate it heavily with the lubricant supplied with the gear. You can't apply too much.

Garage door opener won't open or close door

The drive gear is stripped. Remove the cover and you can see it just in front of the motor. It is white nylon and the part number is 41A2817. Available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It will come with instructions.

Craftsman 1\2 hp clicks, motor wurrs for 1 sec', but doesn't open

You have a stripped gear on the opener. Take off the cover on the motor. The bottom of the cover will be filled with white shavings. You can repair this with a "liftmaster gear and sprocket assembly".

CRAFTMAN 1/2 HP OPENER

You say it only opens two feet?? Then closes?? If I may if you a little bit more costly option. Dont replace the gears. They used to be really good 8 years ago but the way they make the gears now there too soft and often strip out much faster. I would suggest that you do what we call a motor head change out. Take off your old chain drive motor head and buy a new one. Pretty simple. Two things though one always make sure you put the new one in with the door down. And the traveler in the down position ( The traveler is the metal thing hooked up to the chain) but far and your gear that you have it sounds to me that you dont have the gears close enough.. but 100 percent on that but a door should never close on it own. It's not safe.

Craftsman Garage Door Opener Won't Open

When mine did this, it was because the nylon gears that drive the chain had stripped. My wife had to live without the opener for a week or more, but I was able to find a new gear kit online and replace the damaged gears. It wasn't difficult.
The other option is to buy a new opener.
