Hi,

From the problem description I understand that the CD/DVD Drive is not visible in the Computer window. Also, I would suggest that check in Device Manager if the CD/DVD Drive shows yellow exclamation mark.

In both the cases, please perform the steps below to delete the upper and lower filter values from the registry: Before performing the below steps, better take backup of the registry if something goes wrong, you can open the Backup file to restore the old registry values:

STEPS TO BACKUP THE REGISTRY

  1. Click the Start button, and then in the Search field, type regedit .
  2. Press the Enter key. NOTE: If prompted for an administrator password or a User Account Control prompt is displayed, type the appropriate password, click Continue or click Yes .
  3. In the Registry Editor window, on the menu bar , click File .
  4. In the File menu, click Export .
  5. In the Export Registry File window, under Export range , click the All radio button.
  6. In the File name box, enter the name for the exported file and then click the Save button.
  7. In the Registry Editor window, click the X button at the upper-right to close the Registry Editor.
STEPS TO DELETE UPPER AND LOWER FILTERS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE WITH THE OPTICAL DRIVE

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run .
  2. In the Run window, next to Open: , type: regedit .
  3. Press the Enter key.
  4. In the Registry Editor window, in the left pane , double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.
  5. In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, double-click the System folder.
  6. In the System folder, double-click the CurrentControlSet folder.
  7. In the CurrentControlSet folder, double-click the Control folder.
  8. In the Control folder, double-click the Class folder.
  9. In the Class folder, click to select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder.
  10. In the right pane , click to select the UpperFilters registry value.
  11. On the menu bar , click Edit .
  12. In the Edit menu, click Delete .
  13. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.
  14. In the right pane , click to select the LowerFilters registry value.
  15. On the menu bar , click Edit .
  16. In the Edit menu, click Delete .
  17. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.
NOTE: Do not delete the UpperFiltersBak orLowerFiltersBak registry values.
  1. Close the Registry Editor window.
  2. Restart the computer.

This will resolve the issue.

Thanks!!!!

ActiveX was downloading and now I can't access any of my programs. Whenever I try to access, a menu box pops up and asks me to pick the program I want to use. Nothing listed will work.

Go to start button > programs > accessories > system tools > System restore. Open system restore and choose a date before the active x tried to download and install. If you look at the page, it will have days or events listed, simply choose an earlier time or before the event that caused the problem. System restore is not a hard drive format program. It was designed and incorporated into windows to reverse problems that arrise through a bad software or hardware event. When you click to apply, system restore will reboot the machine and go through the phase of backing up a few days or hours depending on the date and time chose. When the computer reboots, it should be free of the problem.

Gateway laptop reset

Gateway Direct systems went "media-less" back in September 2004. In the event of a system crash users could either 1) restore their systems from the Recovery Partition OR 2) from the backup media that they were prompted to create on first power-up -- which would provide them with up to 5 blank CD-R discs depending on their system's configuration.

On the factory load of the hard drive, the recovery partition will not contain operating system files. It only contains application and driver files.
The first time the recovery partition is used, it prompts the user to insert their System Recovery CD/DVD to copy files from the CD to the recovery partition.
The Drivers and Applications CD is not bootable and does not contain Operating System files.
The System Recovery CD/DVD is bootable but does not contain any application or driver files.
If the end-user erases the hard drive and restores the computer using the System Recovery CD/DVD and an Applications and Drivers CD, the recovery partition is not recreated.

This means that you will need the operating system restore disc FIRST then the recovery partition will work for you

After changeing few settings I can no longer play cd's/dvd's

Hi,

If you have system restore set up, you can go back to before you changed your settings. If you are using Windows XP, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Choose Restore my system to an earlier time, and click Next. Click on a day before the change, and time, click Next, and follow through the steps. If this does not work for you let me know, and I will try to assist you further.

Thanks

If not,now Click on "Start" button
Select "All programs"

Select "System restore"

Select a restore point or days when you know  your system was working fine.

System restore will complete afetr reboot, and it will detect your CD-DVD drive untill and unless your CD-DVD drive got malfunction.

If the problem still persists,Remove the DVD drive and place it again and restart the system and check if the operating system detect your DVD drive. If not, replace the DVD drive.

I forgot my password for my laptop dell inspiron 1720

Hello,

This works with windows XP or Vista-

Windows Vista Repair through DVD Windows Vista comes with a very handy feature from Windows ME days -- System Restore. Vista's System Restore is far more sophisticated than its previous iterations and can be of a real help here. 1. Just pop in the Vista DVD, make sure your BIOS is able to boot (start) from DVD-ROM first.
2. Press any key to boot from DVD when asked.
3. Set the Language to install, Time and currency format and Keyboard or input method
4. Now click Repair your computer, select the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
5. Click System Restore, and then click Next.
6. Click the restore point that was a day before you changed the password, and then click Next.
Doing this will set your computer back in time to the particular date when it was working fine. Don't worry, you won't lose any data -- only that any settings or programs installed after that date will not be accessible anymore. All you've to is re-install and redo any settings that you did.
7. Confirm the disks that you want to restore, and then click Next.
8. Click Finish, and then click Yes when you are prompted.
9. When the System Restore process is complete, hit Restart computer.
10. You can either remove the Windows DVD or just don't hit any key on the keyboard when it asks again to "Press any key." The computer will start much faster if you remove the Vista DVD.
11. After the computer restarts, click Close to confirm that the System Restore process has finished successfully.
12. After you log on with the old password, change the password for the administrator account if you like.
13. This step is most important -- Remember the password this time.
14. Restart the computer to make sure that your new password works fine.
