Question about Sharper Image Professional Plus Ionic Breeze? QUADRA GP Silent (SI861) (2 Pack) Air Purifier

1 Answer

We cleaned and treated it as instructions and within 3/4 months it just stopped working ! We could smell 'burning' and so immediately unplugged it. when we plugged it back in - nothing , as if no power was getting to it. It's plain dead. What do we do ? Is it a fuse problem ? We have the exact same model downstairs (bought both at same time) and it's working fine - so far. Advice please. My family have allergy problems , which is why we purchased them. Yours Sincerely, Sharon Hayes

They come with a full year warranty. I had something similar happen to me and they only took about 10 minutes of my time to order and ship a new one.

Ecoquest fresh air not omitting ozone

Did you clean the plate contacts with alcohol? How old is the plate? Is the glue that holds the grid in place turning brown? If it is, it may need to be replaced. Call (336) 499-2505 and ask for free email supplemental cleaning instructions before you do anything else. The instructions may help you solve the problem.

I have an Alpine ZL-3 and we can't smell the ozone any more. Our air doesn't smell fresh any more. My husband has been cleaning the ozone plate with warm water. Does this have anything to do...

OK- The plate needs brushing with a bristle brush to get the oxidized crystals and grime off it. If you don't, it will not create ozone. I never use water any more, it rusts the plate eventually. Rust also stops the process. I use rubbing alcohol. Cheap and safer than ammonia...MUCH safer. Blow dry. The only bulb is the radio wave ionization indicator bulb, attached to the round antenna-looking thing. You should wipe the ionizers off with alcohol every 6 months too. If they are gunked up they don't work nearly as well. Look up the Living Air Classic manual.

880 alpine air (2) on upper level one in kitchen and one in laundry room. Question: I clean the purifiers about once per month and the problem is that there is no clean air smell any longer. They are...

The transformer may be burned out. This supplies the power to the contact points which send current through the plates. You can try ordering new plates, just to see if yours are just plain worn out! You're doing the right thing, by using ammonia/water, but they aren't made to last forever! Call Vollara (new name for EcoQuest) at 800-989-2299. Use #16618 if you're no longer in touch with the registered distributor who sold you the machines. If you still detect no clean air amell, the machines need a part which the company no longer handles. And they no longer manufacture the 880 or Breeze, which was its upgrade. Customer service will explain your options.

I have 2 Ecoquest Fresh Air purifiers located in oposite ends of my basement. One in my work shop area (approx 28x32) and the other in my finished basement area (approx 28x50). The reason I chose this...

Hi Ed,

You should also clean the contacts points that touch the plates with the amonia and water solution. Use a brush and to remove any deposits on those contacts. Also the purification plates will not work if they are still damp when they are put into the machine. They must be completely dry in order to work. Use a hair dryer to dry off any water on the metal grid or allow them to dry for 24 hours. Hopefully that should get your plates going again.

In regards to when you should replace the plates. As long has the plate material is not cracked and you can clean the metal grids to a shine they should be good. But they should be able to last several years with good maintenance.

The RCI cells should be replaced every 3 years or when the machine displays "Replace RCI" message.

Hope this helps you.

I no longer smell the ozone smell that i used too.

You probably have a burned out high voltage transformer. That's what produces the ozone. Helpful hint...........the high voltage transformer is also the one used in bug zappers.

No clean air smell/crackling & static

To stop the crackling sound, you need to remove all of the dust particles from the wire in the back. Sometimes when the unit is extremely dirty you can see sparks emanating from the wire, this is what causes the crackling sound. The unit has a built in cleaner you can lift up and down to perform this task, located on the top, but this doesn't work extremely well.

I usually take a can of compressed air and blow as much of the dust I can off the wire and all surrounding internal areas as I can. This along with a thorough cleaning of the blades should eliminate the crackling noise. Of course, make sure the device is unplugged before performing any cleaning.

Not sure about the smell though. Mine has started to smell a little strange and I haven't figured out how to fix that problem.

Electrical burning smell

Hello there,

Given your description, I'd say you have a short-circuit. Arcing (sounds like arc-welding, not the gentle buzz of normally-operating discharge plates) indicates a serious problem with the high-voltage side. Since I'm not an electrician, and you probably aren't either, I'd do the following.

1) If it's under-warranty, contact the dealer you purchased them from, or contact Ecoquest directly.

Ecoquest International
310 T. Elmer Cox Drive,
Greeneville, TN 37743
1-800-989-2299

Get and RMA # and proceed according to their instructions.

2) If out-of-warranty, understand you'll need to have someone qualified (either at Ecoquest or a qualified electrician or electronics technician) find the short and repair it, and this will generally cost you something. Request a quote in-advance, and decide how you wish to proceed. On the plus side, Ecoquest will often upgrade/refurbish the hardware inside if they do a repair, so it's sometimes certainly worthwhile.

Good luck.

The ozone plates need to be cleaned monthly to work effectively. You can get an owner's manual for free from the manufacturer's website, it's at:

http://www.ecoquestintl.com/support/US50300_Living_Air_Owners_Manual.pdf

The manual has a description of the type and frequency of cleaning of various parts of your air purifier. Hope this helps!
