Question about New Balance 1400 Treadmill

3 Answers

I have a New Balance 1400 treadmill (manufactured by FitnessQuest) that won't stay powered up. Turning on from the main power switch, I hear a beep and a relay activate on the lower board, the console screen lights up, shows the initialization screen, gets to normal treadmill screen, but then goes dim. The console power button doesn't work to turn the machine on. Per a customer service rep suggestion, I checked the lower board ceramic fuse, which had continuity, and the "reset" switch near the main power switch. I also verified that the safety key switch was working. Thinking it was the power button, I opened it up and tried to short out the switch contacts but it didn't work. I also didn't see any overheated/melted/burned components or blown capacitors on either the lower motor circuit board or the upper console circuit board. I hate to throw this thing away, but it may be too expensive to repair. Can anyone suggest something else to check?

The board stays on just a second or so once the primary treadmill display comes up. But it's consistent and always goes dark at the same point. This lead me to believe the upper circuit board was the issue. It's clear I'm getting power to the upper board since it lights up, but it appears to be failing some initialization routine and turning itself off.

I have remove the upper board and have identified a custom microcontroller chip that may be the problem. There is a 12V power input on this board and allows me to reproduce the problem without being connected to the lower board harness. I suspect this microcontroller is somehow corrupted.

I'm going to try to get this chip from FitnessQuest. Any other suggestions?

Here's a video of what the console displays when the main power switch is flipped:

None of the console buttons work after the screen goes dim.

I've isolated the problem to the upper console circuit board. Does anyone know what component on this board is the most likely to fail so I can check it?

The only weak spot on the main controller board is the small rechargeable battery or a lithium button cell.
The memory battery is to keep the parameter information.
When the battery is damaged the liquid (electrolytic) drips downward on to other electronic items.
Any items under the "drip" pathway will need to be inspected and clean.
The battery can be on the front or rear on the main board,

Spend some time to locate this battery,
A simple $12 item can stop the unit from operating!

Please email me the part number or spec, info on the battery on reply.

As the lights comes up,this indicates the upper board is receiving power. You are correct. But it itself turns off after few seconds,This indicates there is short in the upper board circuit. As you mentioned that micro chip in the upper board is got corrupted and this is getting short and causing the problem. In this case the micro chip has to be replaced. If its available in spare,in other case the board itself has to be replaced.Because some micro chips are not available. It directly comes with board. If that is the case, then you will have to go with board replacement. But still you try to get the micro chip part from the FitnessQuest. But if this part is not available, then you can try it at local electronic appliance parts store.Or at online part store sites like:-- www.radioshack.com .But if this part is not available, then you will have to replace the board.-------------Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

The small resistors and IC capacitors fails or get loose on the board mostly. But there are few capacitors also they can get bulged up from top and get leaked. But to confirm the fault you need to check the circuit track with meter.Where there is no continuity in between the track, that means there is short. So the component on that circuit part are to be checked.---------------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

It sound like either the wire harness that goes to upper console is bad or the Motor Control Board that has the 5v or 12v is missing. Here is the bad news New Balance is out of the Treadmill business and do not carry these items anymore. Their might be one other thing you might try is that if this unit was not maintain as owner's manual suggests, then the fuse may have open up. You must open the motor shroud locate motor control board find the fuse, if you have a multi meter check continuity of the fuse if open replace it with the same value ( maybe 15amps). Plug unit in if the display returns then proceed to do the prescribe maintenance in owner's hopefully that the belt and deck was not damaged when it went dead.
    Good Luck!!

Have a new balance 1400 treadmill. when i power it on the screen goes blue and it will not doing anything.

Does the screen turn on (blue) and then go black or does it stay blue? Mine has a similar problem where when the main power switch is flipped, it lights up, shows the initialization screen, then goes dark. Pressing any button on the console does nothing. I opened the console up and suspect one programmable microcontroller is bad. I'm going to see if I can get that part from FitnessQuest instead of replacing the whole board.

I can not get the treadmill to power on.

I have the same problem and have isolated it to the main console board. When you flip the main power switch, does the console display light up briefly and then go dark?
