You don't need to install a wireless router. unplug your modem, connect the ethernet cable from your modem to the port on your router labeled internet or WAN, and then plug in the modem and router. Connect your computer to the network and you should be online.
try to reinstall the driver off the manufactures website, and if that doesn't work it might be the chip on the Ethernet card over heating meaning the card is bad and need to be replaced, if so they are quite cheep and many plug into usb ports or you can go wirless
It sounds like you are setting up your new laptop to connect to your cable modem. If that is correct, your laptop should only have one ethernet port. The other port should be for the modem, but it does look very similar to the ethernet port. I would highly suggest getting an inexpensive router to place between your laptop and your cable modem. The routers come with detailed instructions on how to connect it to the cable modem and the computer. This will provide 2 things for you. The first is ease of connection, and the second is protection from all of the bad stuff on the Internet.
are yu sure you mean ethernet cable?
