I have exactly the same problem with a brand spanking new laptop. We watched one dvd and then when I went to access another disc I got the exact same messages. The drive disappeared from "My Computer" and only shows with an ! in systems. The uninstall/reinstall/reboot idea does not work.

I am having the same problem with this drive installed in a new HP Pavillion DV2500. Anyone have any more suggestions as the uninstall / reinstall suggestion did not work.

When trying to update the driver, it says the most recent driver is installed.
