Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I was washing and it made a clicking sound then it didn't spin or agitate. My hubby leaned it over to look behind and a black round piece fell out from under it. Where did it come from and what part is it? Where do we find a detailed diagram to see how to put it back together? And best of all, how do we fix it?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (110.#######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts.

Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

The other shaft on the motor directly drives the pump. This is likely why the machine drains.

If the motor coupler is broken, or worn, the motor may not be able to send full power to the transmission for agitating or spinning.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and motor mounting plate to inspect and replace the motor coupler.

If the coupler looks damaged, it's a relatively easy fix.

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

Kenmore 90 does not spin (sounds like working & coupler is good)

If the coupler is ok then the next thing to check is the brake/ basket drive cam driver, the ear breaks off on em and won't release the brake. You must remove the agitator and drop the tranny to check itffbcc2d.jpg
Nothing is difficult about repairing the washer. I have repair photos HERE

Washing machine does not agitate or spin. Water

The motor couplings sound as if they have gone bad. They are between the motor and transmission. Set of couplings are less than 20.00 and cabinet has to come off machine to do this. If I knew model number I could tell you how to remove cabinet but without it there are several different ways. Do not take the back off tho no matter what you do. Less than 5 minutes and the body is off.

Agitator not working

if the machine is not spinning or agitating and you are getting a humming sound the the motor coupling is probably out... lean the machine back and look in between the motor and transmission... you either see two round plastic pieces sandwiching a rubber piece, or you'll see chewed up rubber and broken plastic... these machines don't have belts... this motor coupling acts as the "belt"

There is a clutch which is mechanically engaged to stop the drum during agitation.

If the location pin is worn or bent it fails to engage and the machine tries to wash and spin at the same time.

Only solution is to call for a man who can fit a new clutch assy

Kitchenaid Washer Model #KAWS700JQ4

Washer has a motor coupler linking motor to transmission. If this motor coupler is broken or has rounded out where it engages the motor and/or transmission gear it will only fill and drain. You can view this coupler by leaning washer back against the wall & looking underneath with a flashlight. There may be a sound dampener panel on the bottom that you have to remove to see it. It is two pieces of white plastic with a rubber grommet in the middle.

Not agitating

Check your drive coupler. Its the rubber piece between the motor and the transmission which makes the washer agitate and spin. the easiest way to check it is to lean the machine back and look for rubber on the floor. Then look behind the motor to see if it is still in tact. Next try wiggling it, If it wiggles a lot replace it. If that doesnt fix your problem, you probably have a bad transmission.

Ge wvsr1060a2ww washer does not spin or agitate

first look to see if this is a belt drive. If not look for a coupler(round black rubber piece with three holes, three plastic fingers from both sides going in it) from the motor to the gearcase. The motor sit between the pump and gearcase, it will pump out, but not spin.
