Seen a spate of these issues of late, I'd think its caused by failing Power capacitors, either bulging or blowing or leaking. You need to get this checked by a technician or TV repairman

While i am on my computer my hp w1907 monitor goes black. if i shut the monitor off and wait a few minutes it will come back on but then it only stays on for a couple minutes and goes black again.

This sounds like a power board problem. Could be failing power capacitors, which are allowing the charge to leak ( stripping the screen, not recommended) will show bulging or leaking capacitors). Or it could be an issue with the PCB. The fact it will restart once it has "cooled down" points to this.

I'm assuming you have tried the monitor on a different computer, just to eliminate the graphics card (unlikely but worth a go)

Solution..get it checked by a qualified TV repairman, it may a be a simple fix.

Viewsonic monitor stays on for only 3-5 minutes and goes off . Then I turn it off an wait and it comes back on!!! what is going on??

I guessing that when you say "goes off" you mean it goes into power-saving mode? Assuming that you're working on the computer at the time (so it's not actually going to power saving mode from inactivity), this might indicate one of two things:
a) the VGA cable to the computer is not in a good contact with the monitor. This might happen if you haven't used the screws to fix it in place, just try to plug it fully in on both ends (computer and monitor). If the monitor sees to VGA signal, it goes into power saving mode automatically.
b) there's a problem with the monitor that builds up after a few minutes. When you turn it off, it "cools down" and can be used again. If that's the case, you should take it to a dealer's shop and have it checked (or replaced if it's still under warranty).

Monitor shuts off after approx 2 min when i start. i turn monitor switch off and turn on again and stays on approx 2 min and shuts off again

Go to control panel > Power options and check the power settings there. Are the settings for "Turn off monitor" set to 2 minutes? Increase the time and see if there is any changes.
If the above does not solve it, it's quite likely that your monitor's power supply is giving problems. Turn it in for warranty/repair.

You don't have a short-circuit. That would have blown the protections or even the monitor. Refer to the manual, that flashing light may be a code that tells you the problem. I don't think the repair would be expensive...

Does the power light stay on? If so, you have an inverter problem. If the power light goes off, you have a power supply problem.

Your power supply has burnt out which unfortunately is extremely common in new devices. I do agree that it may be worth fixing if it is only couple years old.

Monitor loses power randomly.

Is your monitor a CRT or LCD type. For CRT type information follows. In most cases your simptoms indicate a problem with the High Voltage or blanking circuits. Caution the High voltage can be as much as 40,000 volts and even unplugged from the wall the picture tube can continue to hold voltage (enough to hurt you). Do you here a snapping sound from the back of the crt. If you do the high voltage is shorting out and the protection circuit is turning off the high voltage. If you do not here sparking another possible cause is a faulty capacitor in the protection circuit or the flyback (high voltage transformer). Unless you are educated in electronic circuit repair this one is probable beyond your curren knowledge level. You can try taking the back off and cleaning out all the dust, but remember to stay away from the red wire that goes to the picture tube. Use only non metal cleaning tools. Good Luck

it would seem that one of the internal components has failed / overheated Dont open the rear of the monitor !

if pos drop it into your nearest pc repair shop and have is serviced it may just need cleaned to free it from dust build up
on the inner parts this may be causing the unit to over heat
