Lost Color after Speaker was too close to TV

I have a Panasonic 27 inch TV. I set an unshielded subwoofer too close to the TV. I removed the speaker after I turned the TV on an notice it had lost its color. The image is not distorted, but the TV is only black and white. Oddly enough, when the menu is pulled up the menu choices are in color. Is this problem fixable?

Good Day, Props123;
It sounds like you may have locked-up the micro, try unplugging TV from wall for 3-4 minutes, then replug. If the TV was magnetized (crt) the osd would also display no color.
Good Luck, Big Irish.

Would putting an EVM10DLX into a set of Yamaha BR-10s be a recommended upgrade? Worth the cost?

It is VERY RARE for such a change to be beneficial. The cabinets and speakers are finely tuned to work together and the originals are usually just as good performers as anything you can replace them with. If you want a subwoofer you need to get a larger cabinet and preferably a larger speaker. A ten inch speaker for subwoofer use would require a closely engineered cabinet. Best to go to a single powered 15 inch subwoofer (one designed as subwoofer) to run alongside your BR-10's.

How much air space do boss blade 15 need

Subwoofers differ in only one way. You get an "Open Air" and a "Closed air" subwoofer, That being said, you'll have to check on your magnet which one you have to make the boxes for that sub. If it is an "Open air" Subwoofer, you should see a "wire mesh" or "grid" in the centre, at the back of the magnet. If it is a "Closed air", the magnet will be solid with no hole whatsoever.

If it is a "Open air" sub, your boxes should be sealed with silicone, and no ports are to be cut in your box.

With "Closed air" subs, you should have 2 ports below your sub and the port sizes should be around 50mm in diameter. You should start with a 100mm long piece in the one box and add 50mm increments to "tune" the port up to 250mm, depending on the frequency of bass you require.

On a 15 inch subwoofer ranging between 80Hz and 120Hz, the box size required should be around 27 liters, meaning that you will end up with a box of 16 inches high, x 16 inches wide, x 16 inches deep. Or 320mm high, x 320mm wide, x 320mm deep.
Enjoy!

My 27 inch orion tv picture looks like hour glass

you have to make sure that if you are using external/additional speakers that you keep them away from console. I had a similar problem when I install a surround sound system in by bar and one of the speakers was very close to the TV. A good friend of mine walked in and said "if you want to get rid of that picture problem and save the life of the TV you had better move that speaker." It has to do with the magnets in the speakers.

Black and white only, no color

Are you saying you lose the color on your TV while using these speakers? That is a WEIRD problem! If they are wireless speakers, then their transmitters are emitting a frequency which is interfering with the color oscillator circuits in your TV. Surely, a different speaker system will cure the problem - you just happened to get a set that uses a transmitting frequency which doesn't agree with your TV's color circuits. You might try placing a flat sheet of metal between the transmitter and your TV. If the color comes back, you've found the problem!

27'' RCA appears out of focus on the vertical Edges of the Screen

I've seen this on many computer CRTs as they age past 6 years. I would imagine that the gun alignment is out. Are all the colors (RGB) fuzzy, or is it hard to tell?

1. Sometimes, extreme settings of contrast or color (usually to offset low output from aging CRT) can appear to unfocus your screen. Adjust color/contrast down if they are maxed out or close to highest setting/pot level.

2. A very likely culprit is unshielded speakers are too close to the screen. If this is the cause, the speakers' magnets distort the part of the screen closest to them (sides), and it will get better/worse as you move the speakers away/closer to the TV. If there are not magnets near the TV, and degauss function does not fix problem ('89 TVs have degauss?), see #3.

3. The focus can be set by adjusting the flyback transformer. As an experienced electrician, you should know about the dangers of messing with the insides of the unit.

If this fails, you might have other bigger issues. I'd suggest a nice trip to lead reclaimer if so. I'd say 19 years is quite a life for a CRT.

Picture problems

This could be an unshielded cable problem. Also magnetisam from speaker(s)(i.e. subwoofer) could affect signal from satelite antenna, or could affect satelite receiver if it's near.
