  1. If the heater on a Reddy heater doesn't start, then check the power or fuel source for the heater. Also check to see that the thermostat is set at a temperature that would require the heater to come on and that there are no fuses blown. If these things are OK, look at electrical connections to see if there are any loose wires, and tighten them. Make sure that the unit is off while checking and fixing these issues.
  2. If the heater still won't produce heat, check for a dirty filter if run on fuel. Turn the unit off, take it apart with a screwdriver and remove the filter. If dirty, rinse it off and let it dry completely before reinstalling. Also check the fuel nozzle to make sure that it isn't clogged. If clogged, remove it and rinse thoroughly. It could also be the igniter itself. If it doesn't seem to be lighting, check to see if the wires to this are loose. The igniter might need to be replaced and the part can be easily ordered from a supply store.
  3. If the heater turns on but won't stay on, the air intake could be dirty. Wipe it out and retry.
  4. If there is an odor with a Reddy heater, take it outside and see if the odor goes away. This is a problem with the Reddy heater. If the odor goes away, then where it is placed inside is not providing it with enough oxygen. Try a more ventilated room. If this doesn't solve the problem, then it could mean the heater is faulty. Take it to a repairman, and do not try to use it again until the issue is resolved.

Heater will not light, i have followed the instructions ,turning thermostate all the way up first, and turn on now what happenes is the glow plug or igniter gets red hot the blower kicks on fuel sprays on...

If you brought the heater to our shop, and gave the above description, the first thing that we would do is check the air pump pressure.

Then, if the pressure is correct (not just close) we would check the photocell for signs of insect nest or something similar blocking the view of the eye.

You must troubleshoot to find out if the problem is fuel related or electronics related- maybe these tips will help (click for link).

I have a Reddy Heater 70,000BTU without a thermostat. It will flare off and within a few seconds the fire goes out and then the it trips out. After a few tries it won't even flare off. What might be wrong?

hello. Your reddy heater is dirty and needs a good cleaning. Also, here are a few other possible reasons why it won't operate properly. Pressure not adjusted to 5.1 psi, dirty outlet filter, clogged inlet filter, bad or dirty photo cell, defective reset switch, pump going bad, dirty injector nozzle, dirty fuel filter, contaminated fuel. Check yours out and do what you can to address each area of concern. Regards, Joe

This is going to be a tough one. You have been thorough, done it right, and it damn sure ought to fire off every time!

There is something that is causing you a problem and don't think that because you put in new parts that you didn't get a bad part. It happens. Not often, but it does happen. I have rec'd nozzles from the factory that had the orifice installed sideways, so, I know it happens.

If the ignitor glows- (it only stays on for 5 seconds, then quits)
If the fuel fogs (not sprays)
If the fuel hits the glowing ignitor
Then it should fire off-- every time.

Now, if the photocell doesn't like what it sees, then the photocell will shut the heater down within 5 seconds, but it at least should have ignited. Right? Unless the photocell or the board are bad. Maybe.

Lift the top, and watch. What's happening. Are you having a fuel problem or an electronics problem? For instance- is the ignitor glowing every time at start up or only sometimes.

Let me know what you find.
