Question about Maytag Neptune Washer

2 Answers

My Maytag Neptune Washer model # MAH6500A top load washer door not locking even though all the controls are functioning properly. As recommended by one of your FixYa Solution Washing machine experts, I ordered and installed a new door lock assembly but the problem did not get fixed which tells me that the door lock assembly is not the issue. I have also followed Maytag's troubleshooting guide for testing the Door Lock and everything seems ok yet the the washer still does not start when I push the Start button which I think is due to the door not locking because the light does not come on. It is possible the electrical component is bad and needs replacement? Thanks for your assistance. Charles

How do I inspect for the burnt components. I have inspected the circuit board paying particular attending to R11 and Q6. I do not know what to look for. I do not have the tools to test the components. Should I just buy a new PCB?

Steve, Thanks for the follow up. I have not taken any action on your information.
So now what is the solution to this problem.

Steve was not able to solve my problem.

    Jahn27,
Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the harness and connections and there seemed to be no issues with them. But before I order another machine control, I wanted to know if there are other possible issues causing this problem. Because all the control on the washer are functioning properly except for the Start button. I also noticed that when I open and close the washer, I would hear the door locking signal but the door does not lock and the machine does not start. Do you still think this is related to a defective machine control ?

The machine is indeed not starting because of the door lock not locking. But the problem is definitely not the door lock assembly. The problem lies in the wire harness connection between the door lock assembly and the machine control or the machine control itself. Check the connection between the door lock assembly and the machine control. Make sure the wire harness is intact and the connectors are clean and snug fit. Reaseat the connectors several times to clean off dirt and corrosion built up.

The problem is the machine control malfunctioning if the wire harness is intact and the connections are clean and snug fit. Replace the machine control and it should solve the problem. Obvious sign of electrical damage such as burnt resistors or semiconductors may be seen in the machine control.

All you have to do is check the wire harness and the connections. Replace the machine control if no issue is found with them.

I would say that it is definitely the machine control. It can send command to the door lock but it cannot detect it locked. This simply suggests that the machine control is malfunctioning. Disconnect power to the machine then confirm it further by disconnecting the power supply and the serial communication link harnesses from the motor control unit at the base of the machine. These are the harnesses that lead from the machine control. Reconnect power to the machine then close the door and start the machine. It is reconfirmed that the machine control is indeed malfunctioning if still the door lock doesn't lock and the machine doesn't start. But if and only if the door lock locks and the machine seems to start, the motor control unit is malfunctioning and interfering with the machine control. Replace the motor control if that is the case, not the machine control.

Charles,

If you've replaced the "wax motor" door lock and it still won't start / spin, I suspect a blown component on the control board on the machine.

Unplug the washer from the outlet before beginning. You can remove the screws at the back of the control to remove the front panel to access the printed circuit board (PCB). Carefully inspect the the board for evidence of burnt components. Pay particular attention to R11 and Q6.

There are suppliers of DIY repair parts on eBay to fix this problem - it works well - I did it to my washer too.

Please rate this reply - thanks & good luck!

    Charles,

In the link I provided to eBay, there are images of burnt / damaged components - R11 & Q6. R11 is a resistor that you can buy for under a buck at Radio Shack if you know the value of the resistor. Q6 is a transistor. Maybe more than a buck - but again, very short money. If you look at this link (nearly all the others, too) for detailed instructions and directions to make the repair. You only need to supply a few hand tools to disassemble the washer to get to the parts,

a small pencil type soldering iron (under $15 at Radio Shack) and a desire to save several hundred dollars.

    Charles,

I read your model number quickly and incorrectly. This information is not for the repair of the MAH6500A; only 2000 Stacker, MAH3000, MAH4000 and MAH5500A. Please disregard this information - I'm sorry for the error.

Maytag Neptune Front Load Washers Wax Motor Replacement

The wax motor needs to be replaced and the control board requires repair or replacement should your Maytag Neptune Front Load Washer fails to advance to the high speed spin cycle and the "door locked" light is not turned on. This is a common issue that led the filing of a class suit against Maytag Corporation in 2004. Disconnect power to the machine prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock that can lead to physical injury, disability, and even death.

Access to the wax motor for replacement requires the removal of the front panel and the top cover. Once the two are removed, disconnect the wires from wax motor terminals then pry the spring clip off and take the wax motor out. Take note of the wax motor position before removing it from the door latch assembly to make sure you fit the new wax motor properly later on. One simple and effective way to do it is by taking a picture of the door latch assembly prior to removal of any component.

Fit in the new wax motor and make sure the shaft is properly seated into the slot provided on the latch axle and secure it firmly with the spring clip provided. Reinstall the top cover and the front panel back into position once the wax motor is properly installed.

does the door lock? if the answer is no then you have a blown resister on your main control board R11 and the reason it blew is your wax motor on your door lock is binding up. you need a new control board and wax motor.

Check the door boot (typically grey rubber bellows looking ring around the door opening that keeps the water in the tub from leaking) for cuts.

This means locked rotor. you have a bad motor control unit. take the door off by removing the 4 screws also take the side/front panel off. You will see the motor control board. Do you have a delay wash cycle? If you do set it to delay wash remove the jp4 connector if the unit tumbles on it's own then the motor controller is fine but if it does not then you have a bad motor control board. Check it out and let me know. also there is a fuse on that board if you can locate it and check for continuity that will also help diagnose it. MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG IT FIRST THOUGH!!!!
