Question about Canon PowerShot A630 Digital Camera

1 Answer

I have a canon powershot a630. It suddenly won't take pictures in auto mode. Orange light in front stays lit and arrow on display screen flashes. It will take pics in some other modes (P, Tv, Av, Landscape).

See this blog article. If you don't notice any gaps, and tightening all the loose screws doesn't help, then the next likely problem is the flash unit itself is burned out. If so, this would require professional repair to correct.

CAnnon Powershot A630 LCD screen will not light up when trying to take a pic. I can, however view old pics that I've already taken.

First press the DISP or DISPLAY button to see if that corrects the problem. If not, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

How do I turn off the flash for the canon powershot a630?

First of all, the flash can not be turned off in "Auto" mode. You can turn it off in any mode other than Auto. Would recommend Program "P" mode, which is very similar to Auto, but allows you to modify certain minor items such as flash and white balance.

Rotate your mode dial to "P", then press the button on the back with the "lightning bolt" icon. Press until the lightning bolt with a slash shows up on your LCD screen. The flash is now turned off in Program mode. Try taking a picture.

Remember, if in low light conditions you'll need to keep the camera extra steady without flash to get a clear picture. Recommend placing the camera on a table or chair (or even better, use a tripod), then using its autotimer to snap the picture.

Canon Powershot A630 - dark image in auto mode

Could it have something to do with "white balance"? http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=14108#SupportDetailAct

When the shooting mode is set to (Auto), the white balance will be applied automatically. However, with the (Auto) mode, the camera may not reproduce the natural color of the subject.

If this don't help, try their website and see if you can troubleshoot it. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=14108#SupportDetailAct

If all fails, buy a newer Canon Powershot. I've tried the newer models and they seem good.

Lost manuel to canon powershot A630 and I wanted to know how to take a black and white picture.

By pressing the center button on the four-way controller, you'll open up the Function menu. This menu has the following options:
  • ISO speed (Auto, High ISO Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800) -
  • White balance (Auto, daylight, cloudy, tungsten, fluorescent, fluorescent H, underwater, custom) -
  • Drive (Single-shot, continuous, self-timer [2 or 10 sec, custom] -
  • My Colors (Off, vivid, neutral, sepia, black & white, positive film, lighter skin tone, darker skin tone, vivid blue, vivid green, vivid red, custom color) -
  • Flash exposure compensation (-2EV to +2EV in 1/3EV increments) - in manual mode you can adjust the flash strength in three steps (1/3, 2/3, full)
  • Metering (Evaluative, center-weighted, spot)
  • Compression
  • Resolution
