Almost the same problem. Initial conditions: just disconnected headphones, and locked.
I plugged it in to the computer. computer slow to recognize device (via the ding sound in XP). Ding sound finally commenced but did not auto open iTunes. Manually opened iTunes. Device did not display in iTunes as available. Noticed the iPod screen was frozen on the last song listened to. Disengaged the Lock (on top of iPod), Locked indication remained on ipod screen. attempted soft shut down (press and hold play) with no avail. disconnected from computer. device disconnection Ding commenced imediatly. reconnected, no ding, comp displayed unknown device connected. disconnected (no ding). attempted soft shut down again. also the backlight remains on.
actions I am taking now: wait untill the battery runs out, then restart.

Why can I only fit 831 songs on my 8 gig iPod touch

It should store at least twice that number of songs in mp3 format, and up to 2000 in the AAC format. The best guess at this range is that there are other files taking up storage, the most likely being a few videos.

Use iTunes to check the storage usage, as described here

I have a problem,I bought a apple i pod mp 3 player a few weeks ago at a flee market, worked fine up until last night I accidently went into lock screen and it went off and now I don't have a clue to...

There are 2 ways to try and unlock it if you don't know the passcode.

1) Connect your iPod to the computer set as the primary one in iTunes. Open the iTunes application, then disconnect your iPod from the computer, and it should no longer be locked.

Only use this next option as a last resort because it is a destructive process.

Everything on your iPod will be erased.

Zune 80 gig will not start

My 80 Zune has a frozen screen as well... This is ludicrous! Well this is how this problem should be resolved:

  1. Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.
  2. Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain—this is good. Wait until the battery is empty and the screen goes black. If the battery was fully charged, this might take a couple of hours.
  3. Wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 (that's 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time).
  4. Connect your Zune to either a USB port on the back or your computer or to AC power using the Zune AC Adapter and let it charge.
I cannot believe the savvy programmers for Zune did not identify this problem in advance... Well I guess we are all human lol... Can't wait to begin listening to my music again!

Have a Happy New Year!

What generation nano do I have?

I don't know it by model number but the generation are easy to define.
A first generation nano is either black or white.  It is made out of the same material as a standard Ipod at the time.  Comes in 1 gig and 2 gig only
A second generation nano is multi colored and made from a metal case.  Similar in design to a mini.  The edges are round as well. comes in 2 gig and 4 gig.
A third generation nano is a different size than 1 and 2.  it has a bigger screen on it.  Can play videos as well.  Comes in 2 gig, 4 gig, and 8 gig as well.

Sorry to say but probably not worth the repair as I've seen 1 gig going lesss then what it would cost round trip for you to ship this one off to the repair dept?? I bought a 256 gig last week with a voice recorder for 12 bucks.
