This is not the encoder strip, this is the encoder DISK. It sits on the far left outer end of the feed shaft. It resembles a round disc with numbers and a solid area as well. Similar to a timing wheel. It only has 2 way tape holding it to the assembly. It fell off when I was cleaning the unit out. There are no other markings to go by.

I have an HP Deskjet 9650, the Encoder "Disk" not the strip has fallen off and I need to know how to put it back in the correct position. The disk is located on the far outside left of the feed roller. It is held on by 2 way tape. The disk has numbers and a dark area similar to a timing disk.

How do I align it, there is nothing available? No notch, no markings just a sprocket and the disk.

The encoder disk is the one connected to the motor, and called Paper Motor Encoder Disk. The part mounts on the left end of the pivot and feedroller assembly shaft. The encoder disk rotation determines timing with motor. The disk does not have timing mark alignment procedure specified in service document.

The problem of refitting the disk can be sorted by purchasing and reinstalling the whole disk and shaft assembly. Here the part: C8137-DRIVE_ASSY.

Try to re-align the enocder disk by putting it slowly at the top of the rail so that the disk will be in proper position. Make sure your printer is off before doing this step..

The encoder strip has a slot on either end that hooks on either side, just behind the carriage.

I would suggest to first carefully clean the encoder strip with a Q-tip.

Hope this resolves your problem.

Replace the Encoder Disk Assembly.

this message may have lit up as end of life counter or because the formatter is unable to correctly locate its position or rotationof the media roller.
this is an engineer call out for the repair I would NOT suggest that a customer is able to correctly fit this part as its deep within the plotter and many calibrations will need to be completed before the plotter is once again ready to print. I would suggest Belmonte Business machines on 0161 480 5556 who can offer nationwide service to all HP Plotters

Hi I've got an HP Deskjet F380 which is now permanently showing an 'E' light and low ink light. It was working fine with occasional glitches with print queues but is now permanently 'in error'...

Clean the electrical contacts on the carriage as well as the cartidge using a soft lint free cloth wetted with iso-propyal alcohol. Clean also the "steel rod" on which the carriage moves.

Wipe clean the encoder strip (a flexible coded PVC strip running through the PCB behind the carriage and hooked at the ends) with a DRY soft cloth (DO NOT USE ANY LIQUID TO CLEAN THE ENCODER STRIP TO PREVENT ERASING OF THE CODE). If still dirty Replace.

Your printer should hopefully start working.

The top of the cradle that holds the black ink cartridge down in place is broken, how do I replace.

Since this is a Deskjet 9650 which mean it is already an obsolete printer. HP might not be manufacturing the parts anymore. Or if they did, it's so much better if you call HP and just Upgrade your printer. HP Printer Tech Support would be more than happy in giving you discounts, you can actually get a brand new printer half the price that you will see on the website plus you can also get an extra year of warranty just by adding $1.00 to the total price of the printer.
