Question about Meade ETX-90EC (325 x 90mm) Telescope

1 Answer

The OTA support on my ETX 90 broke. I actually did not use the scope for years and when tried to work with it found that the vertical hold does not work. I took apart the right holder and found that its cylindrical post that goes through and gets fixated by the right nob was broken in half. Gluing it together did not work. Where can I find a replacement part? Thank you in advance

There is a "BOLT" do it yourself fix for this on the Mighty ETX web site. Seach for DEC Fix --- or send Mike an email.

After being in storage my etx has condensation spots in side on lens how can i remove these '

It is also possible this is mould, if the scope has been in storage. Mould looks different however, a brown spot or two. Condensation of course is water droplets.

Weasner's guide to repair may assist if you need to get inside

Meade can repair these scopes but they will want you to return the scope--

Red wire from battery off, where does it go?

It broke off of the circuit board. Actually I PURPOSELY cut both of the battery wires OFF! This makes it much easier to work on the internal gears.

Just buy a separate 12 volt power pack and stop using the internal batteries. The scope functions better on a regulated separate power pack. Buy the proper 12 volt cigarette lighter style power cord.

I never use the internal batteries and have removed them completely from the scope. If they leak they will ruin the circuits inside the base of the scope.

Motor tries but cannot move on the horizontal. Moves fine on the vertical. Usage only in Alt/Az mode. Only have the electronic controller that came with the scope.

You did tighten the AZ clutch? You did start from the HOME position? (turn the scope Counterclockwise to the hard stop)

Then you will either have to send it back to Meade for repairs, or open the bottom of the base, and look inside and see if the AZ worm gear is actually meshing with the motor. It could have come loose.

Etx90 geartrain broke

Only Meade has parts. Usually they want you to send the scope back to them for repairs. However you can contact their customer service department and ask if they will sell you just the part:

On a meade ETX 90RA Premier edition

Contact Meade and see what they charge to CLEAN the telescope:

I seem to remember it was about $100 plus shipping. The 80 is a completely different telescope style-- the 90mm is a Maksutov Telescope.

Need instruction manual for 1996 or 1997 etx 90 basic model

The manuals are all available to download from www.meade.com.

If your scope has the motor drives and a control panel into which a controller could be plugged, then you just need to buy an Autostar 497 - always available on eBay for about £85. However, there are older models of the ETX which only have one motor or as a spotting scope for terrrestrial use with no motors - Autostar cannot be connected to these.

Look at the pictures of scopes on eBay which come with Autostar - if your looks like these, Autostar will fit. Else you are out of luck!

Meade etx-80 sticking

Some (not all) versions have an end stop - it it just reaching that? The scope will rotate only aboit 3 complete turns between the 2 ends.

The 'correct' starting position is as follows: Place scope on tripod or table with control panel at the West. Unlock the declination lock (horizontal slew). Rotate scope anticlockwise until it hits the end stop, Then roate it back clockwise until scope is pointing North (should be about 3/8 of a turn, as the end stop is at South West). Then lock the declination, Set the tube horizontal and continue with the alignment process.

Autostar always thinks you have set the position like that. If you haven't, it will work OK until it tries to rotate past the point it won't go, then chaos results!
