I bought a brand new compaq mini 102 with windows xp installed in it. Once i turned the unit on, it takes long time to boot and if i open a folder or a file, it took minutes to respond. How can this be fixed? im planning to re-install the OS but will this help solve the problem?

Hello,

I think you have a virus threat in your laptop.

if you are using internet than you must use a good antivirus programme & First you install a good antivirus & scan your laptop it will surely fix your problem.

if above doesnt work than u can do defragmentation of your harddrive it will surely help you.

Thanks

My inspiron 1018 won't boot. i need to reinstall or repair my software. it does not have a cd drive. please advice action.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 series of netbooks come with recovery software that can restore your netbook's original factory settings. Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbooks with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 can be recovered to the factory settings using a recovery partition on the hard drive.
Windows Vista or 7
Turn on or restart your Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook. Press the "F8" key repeatedly when the "Dell" logo appears on the screen to be redirected to the "Advanced Boot Options" menu.
Highlight "Repair Your Computer," and then press "Enter."
Highlight the language layout you want to use for your keyboard and click "Next." Enter your username and password if prompted. Click "OK."
Click "Dell Factory Image Restore," and then click "Next." The recovery software on some Dell Mini systems may require you to click "Dell Factory Tools" followed by "Dell Factory Image Restore" and "Next."
Click "Next" if you understand the netbook will be restored to its original factory settings. The recovery process will begin.
Click "Finish" when a message appears saying the recovery is complete. The netbook will restart and boot up to the Windows Vista or Windows 7 set-up screen, where you can begin personalizing your netbook.

Windows XP Recovery
Turn on the computer. Press the "Ctrl" and "F11" keys at the same time while the computer is booting up to access the recovery software.
Click "Restore."
Click "Confirm" to begin the recovery process, which shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes.
Click "Finish" to restart the computer and finalize the installation. Click "Yes" to restart the netbook again. The computer will boot up to the Windows XP setup screen

Here is a link which will take you to the site which will allow you to download a ZIP file with a WEB PAGE type service manual for your 1018, after a 45 second wait. (They want you to sign up for premium service but NOT NEEDED) Click again after wait?
After download, open the ZIP file and copy all contents to a new folder. Double click the Contents.html file to open in a web browser, then use the built in shortcuts to navigate the manual.

How to unlock password for a HP 2140 Mini-Note

If you are talking about the login to Windows password then here is one way to do it:
Create a bootable USB stick using this tool: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/

Use the image from Ophcrack to load onto the USB: http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php Choose the XP LIVE CD Option
1. Download the YUMI exe to your desktop 2.. Save the LIVE CD of Ophcrack to your desktop. 3. Plug in the usb stick you want to use (make sure it is at least 500MB. 1GB if possible) 4. Run the YUMI EXE and follow the instructions. Make sure to choose the USB Drive Letter ("D:" E:" etc) 5. Choose the Ophcrack ISO for the image. 6. Install to USB 7. Click Finished and exit the program and close any other open programs. 8. Restart the computer. Leave USB plugged in. 9. As soon as the computer restarts, tap the F10 button to enter the BIOS Menu. 10. Scroll to the Boot / Advanced Menu and change the boot order to USB first, HDD second. 11. Save and exit BIOS. Computer will restart. 12. Once booted up the computer will bypass the HDD and boot into the USB 13. elect Ophcrack from the list and hit Enter. 14. Follow the on-screen instructions to have Ophcrack force the password.

(If you're using Linux then use the Linux LIVE CD Image instead of XP)

Hello, I try to instal Windows XP Pro SP3 on a Compaq Mini 102 but Windows installation don't found the Hard drive. Display : Windows XP Professional Setup ============================ Setup has...

we can not guess how you did this.
Microsoft CD/dVd install media, ?
HP CD install media from HP
home made media,???? dont
or F11 key restore.
so how can we guess that, ?and MATTERS BIG TIME.

didn't find ,past tense.
first off , not all PCs are the same.
did you go TO BIOS and run the HDD test first? page 73 below.
after the HDD can BAD , so we do that first.
if that fails it is bad, for sure.!!! buy a new SSD and install that?

then boot and (power button) and press F11 as the service guide tell you, see link at end.
F11 reloads the OS. page 92

F11 is only works if:
1: HDD GOOD
2: Someone did not install Microsoft OS and kill the HP restore partitions.
3: XP virus didnt wreck that partition or someone did foolishly.

if F11 is dead, then only HP install disk work. real.
that means all HP software like new still all works like day 1.
if all you need is email, then other solutions are available.
first google hit btw... in 1 second flat.....

try setting the bios for the hd to ide compatible
windows xp does not include sata drivers which is why you can't detect the hdd.
if you set it to ide compatible it should work

My compaq presario f700 laptop boots when it wants

Your system is damaged. You need to have Vista cd. (or xp, or linux, etc) Then you must get to Bios, or bootmenu. When laptop boots, it is on a screen what key to press to make bios or menu running. Maybe f2 or del, maybe f12. When you in Bios, search something like bootmenu, or advanced bios features, then - first boot device. Make it as -cdrom. Press enter or maybe page up/down to change it. Now you must save this by pressing f10 or some key for save, and pressing y. Comp will boot again and run from Vista cd. In its menu you have option repair, but not always this will work (If you doing it with xp, forget to repair Vista). Try this, and if not working, reinstall system on the same partition. Dont format drive, just install, it will give you no loss of data (with xp, i dont think so, you just have to format system partition, but if you have something on second and more, non system partition, dont format it, data on this second will be ok). This it for instalation. After, you will have old vista in some folder (With xp you dont). You should delete this folder when everything works. Do not delete the new one :) No, no, you will find it easy, it should be something like -oldwindows. Better to remove it, cos' it takes a lot of hd. After it all try to find some good antivirus to avoid situations like this.

Hard Drive with password protected.

I had the same problem. This is how I reset my password on a compaq or hp nc6320.
1. unplug the power cord
2. unplug the battery
3. take two screws from the ram cover on the back of the laptop (see youtube for this step)
4. open the keyboard
5. unplug the cmos battery cable (very easy to do)
6. plug power cable and turn on the laptop
7. laptop would erase passwords.
8. put everything back together.

A pleasure to help.
