Question about Whirlpool Duet GHW9150P Front Load Washer

Whirpool Duet Front Load Washer

I've been getting stains mostly on cotton t-shirts (coloured). The stains dis-colour the fabric like oil would. They are random and in various patterns. There is no odor that comes from the machine. I have been advised to use Affresh to clean the unit and this should help. This has happened from day one. I have lost enough good shirts that either I try to solve the problem or toss the machine out. I'm pretty handy can anyone suggest a troubleshooting procedure.

I have the same problem with oil like stains after the wash is complete. I use the Whirlpool Duet. We normally wash the shirts again. It does not happen all of the time. It is very annoying.

It may be the same problem we have, that the fabric softener is leaking before it's supposed to in the cycle.
If there is water left in the tray, the suction is not broken, and the fabric softener will immediately start leaking into the drum.  To stop this, we lift the fabric softener/bleach cup up out of that water to break the seal.  Leave it up for a few seconds.
That seems to do the trick.  Although, in my opinion, it should not happen to begin with.

I have some spots of superglue on a lovely shirt, is there a substance which will remove it?

Probably not without damaging the fabric because these glues are so hard. 2 products I would try if you can get them where you are:
1. tea tree oil
2. Eucalyptus oil.

These will react with normal glues and break them down without harming the fabric or taking out any colour. I have not tried either of them with any of the super glues so I cannot say if it will be successful with such super tough products. I would also test them on another piece of similar fabric spotted with the glue before using them and that will tell you if they will work on the SG.

Other than that you would need to try various strong solvents to see if they would break down the glue and enable you to remove it. The problem is you may end up with a stain, loss of colour or some damage to the fabric if it is a sensitive fabric. If you test some of these on an old piece of similar fabric you have spotted with the glue you will be able to see which one worked without harming the fabric.

If you can buy a bottle of dry cleaning fluid (I cannot remember the technical name) you may be able to move it using a liberal amount of that product or just soaking the areas with the spots in the fluid. Be careful handling it as it is pretty toxic.

Applying steam (from a boiling kettle ) to areas of the fabric affected may soften the glue a little and enable you to roll it off the fabric if it is not heavily impregnated. Whilst this can work with some of the softer glues it may not with the SG. I would also test it first on another piece of fabric

I have a jacket that was washed & the fabric stained from the detergent

Probably oxyclean? It has bleach in it and the jacket may not have been "colorfast". Or you may have had left over bleach getting into the wash. Or a bleach dispenser leaking?

Rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits (denatured alcohol) from the drugstore or hardware store are ideal to remove ink stains, as long as the stains have not set. The alcohol neutralizes the pigment in the ink so it disappears. Either soak a washable garment in rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits, then wash as normal,[2] or use the following process:
  • Dip a clean cotton swab into rubbing alcohol.
  • Dab at the soaked up ink mark with the cotton swab (bud) or small sponge.
  • Repeat this each time with a fresh cotton swab or sponge, as many times as needed.
  • Dip another fresh cotton swab or sponge into cold water and dab the area to remove the alcohol from the fabric. For best results, let the fabric dry before trying to remove the ink stains again. Rubbing alcohol works best on a dry fabric, but after each application you must rinse it with water. The process of removing heavy ink stains is a lengthy, cyclical process of blot, rinse and dry.
  • Allow the area to dry. Wash the garment as normal.

Brown streaks on white cloths?

Hi Ralph,
It may be important to have an idea as to what caused the stain/discoloration. Carbona ( has different products specific to the various reasons for the problem. You may be able to use bleach, depending on the fabric affected. Some white material turn yellow with bleach
Hope this helps ~ Good luck!

Can you restore colour into fabrics if it has faded

Yes, but that would require some serious dying by hand. This isn't something that would normally be answered in a Sewing machine repair area. But google dharma trading company. depending on the fabric buy fiber reactive (natural plant fibers such as cotton, linen or rayon) or acid dyes (natural fibers such as wool, silk and some man made polyesters) About $5+ a color

If it has lots of colors and you are trying to be frugal you might try permanent markers. Bic has a good artists set under the name of Bic Mark-it.

When you work with either dyes or with markers, be sure to place something between the layers of fabric so you won't get bleed through.

Good luck.

My Frigidaire FTF530FS Front Load Washer appears to be leaking oil and it is getting on my clothes

Hello Loree Grudem - This can be the result of the shaft bearing and seal. They may have become worn and the transmission oil is creeping up to get in your water. Once this happens, it gets on your clothes to cause staining. Or possibly you have a buildup of fabric softener that comes loose and puts a greasy like substance in your water and on your clothing. Once you put your clothes in the dryer and the old fabric softener melts you will see these spots. I suggest contacting a professional to move forward accurately.
