Question about Sony Cameras

1 Answer

Shutter lag: compare Sony DSV HX5V with Sony Alpha 55: "Do you NEED a new camera? If the Sony does what you you need it to do, then stay with it" -Most of the time my Sony is fine and I have learned to use it quickly with presetting of speed and auto-exposure. I sometimes photograph my girlfriend in a foreign setting, inobtrusively with my compact Sony without getting permission and can only take one or two shots, Like once in Cairo;s oldest mosque. But mostly I have the chance to repeat the shot with her.. And this I do if exposure first time, for example, was too dark on face because camera exposed for sky background, On a repeat shot I might use fill-in flash (but then no multiple burst).. But what if the situation is unrepeatable and I really need that picture, and shutter lag is critical. In which case do you think my Sony DSV HX5V is slower reacting with normal pressing of shutter button using auto exposure, than the Alpha 55? "...the new Sony Alpha 55. It looks like a small SLR, but the mirror doesn't flip up, eliminating one mechanical step" -And likewise mirror doesn't flip up when I half depress the button on my Sony DSV HX5V? And what about normal depressing of shutter button using auto exposure, does the Alpha 55 have a shorter shutter lag than my Sony? I suppose the best thing to do is to go into the Sony Centre, Moscow, and ask to compare an Alpha 55 with my Sony DSV. What test situation would you recommend to compare shutter lag? I think I might try this: Get someone to drop a coin on a table, and I photograph it with each camera a few times, and see which camera consistently catches the coin in mid-air halfway between hand and table. Being able to depress the button and instantaneously get desired moment was what I was able to do with my rangefinder Leica over 50 years ago. And this helped kick off my photo career. As an Army photographer on manuevres in Grafenwoehr, Germany in 1961. I wanted to catch the moment when a Howitzer projectile passes through the smoke ring caused when a mock atomic round is fired. I got it after several tries, and Red Grandy at Stars and Stripes gave me center page spread featuring that shot. I think this moment would have been far harder to achieve using today's digitals, even the large ones. What do you think? I wonder what opinion experienced professional photograhers have on that, who have used both Leica and today's pro-digital camera? (I understand if you are reluctant to candidly answer that question so as not to offend digital camera marketeers!) PS: You are welcome to publish my email address in case anyone wants to give me their opinion on this.

While taking photos yesterday, my shutter button stayed down or wouldn't click. The "no lens attached" came on, even though I had just finished taking some photos. My Sony a100 is 5 years old and...

There is propably a connection problem between the camera and the lens. Try taking the lens og the camera, and reattach it. If this does not work, try cleaning the golden connectors on the lens and the camera. Use a q-tip, gently rub the connectors, and reattatch the lens. If this does not work, you should get the camera serviced at a repair center.

sounds like the shutter chain is slipping, or shutter is sticking, this does not look good. you may need to have the body replaced, usually camera shops will tell you that the repair costs more than the replacement.

i would take to a sony dealer for further advice, I assume you are still under garantee you should be ok. as this model only came onto the market last august. and usually has 24 months cover on parts.

I hope this was useful.

I have a sony alpha a230 camer and just bought a bower 500mm lens but when its atteched the shutter stays lock and wont take a picture. The camera doesnt recognize the lens

The lens doesn't have the electronics to communicate with the camera, hence the camera doesn't recognize it. You need to switch the camera to manual exposure mode. You won't get any help from the camera's exposure meter, so use the LCD monitor and the histogram display. You also won't get any autofocusing.
