    Exact same problem. I think it began after installing recent (July 2008) Firmware Upgrade.

    Same problem, but after purchasing reman brother toner cartridge. I refilled the original cartridge myself and after it emptied I purchased this remanned one. Printed great in beginning for about 2 days, then error starts repeatedly. I did read the user manual for this error and it gives suggestions to delicately clean the drum with swabs, etc. The apparently has some electrostatic material that is ver delicate. If anyone has a suggestion to bypass this error since the drum doesn't even rotate before the error occurs, I'd greatly appreciate it. $59-70 is too much to print and I really don't believe I got much printing out of the original cartridge at round 1 when it was new.

    Same problem starting in April 2008, after running for 6 months and using about 3 cartridges during that time with no problems. My wife declared the MFC-7820N laser printer useless after encountering the drum error message constantly with a newly installed "brand new" remanufactured cartridge. She swapped the laser printer with my old inkjet MFC.

    I believe the problem is really related to the motor that drives the cartridge mechanics. I suspect that the electronics is sensing that too much motor current is required to drive the cartridge (which could be a drum problem) and generating the drum error message.

    I have taken problem cartridges and sprayed a little lubricant here and there on gears and then manually used a large screwdriver in the drive connection to rotate the cartridge mechanics to work the lubricant in and reduce the torque required to make the cartridge work.

    After that treatment, I got a lot fewer drum error messages. Just don't get anything on the drum itself or rollers, or the cartridge is toast.

    I seem to remember reading somewhere that Brother has used the TN-350 cartridge for years in a lot of different machnes. The older machines had more gear reduction to drive the cartridge (developed more torque), although they were slower. A remanufactured/refilled older cartridge may expect more torque to drive it than the faster MFC-7820N is capable of developing reliably.

    You may have to buy new Brother TN-350 cartridges to get the reliability you want out of the MFC-7820N.

    I noticed that others had some success refilling the original cartridge from Brother. If new TN-350 cartridges from Brother require less torque, they would work in all the old machines that use TN-350 cartridges as well as the newer MFC-7820N.

    I finally found the root cause of my "drum error, slide the blue tab back and forth" message.

    I replaced the after market drum unit that came as part of a "toner cartridge" with a new Brother DR-350 drum unit (bought from Amazon).

    I finally figured out that Brother toner units are made up of a drum unit and a toner cartridge. When buying a non-Brother toner cartridge, for whatever reason it is quite common for the cartridge to be sent in a drum unit (which you and I have found out is worthless junk - hence the error message). For those of us with other laser printers where the cartridge includes the drum, it seems reasonable to pull the whole toner unit out of the Brother printer and replace it with the non-OEM unit we just bought. However by doing that, you just threw away a good drum unit and replaced it with a bad drum unit.

    I have no clue as to why the aftermarket sells toner cartridges with bad drum units included. I have even seen stickers that secure the two together with a "Do Not Remove" message. Trust me, break the sticker and remove the after market cartridge from the included drum unit and install the cartridge into your original drum unit. I have found that even if the after market drum unit looks good, it will still give problems.

    Make sure if you replace the drum unit to reset the page counter. On the 7820N printer you 1) open the front cover, 2) push the OPTIONS button, and 3) select Y for replace drum. Otherwise you'll get the replace drum message sooner than you should.

    I have a Brother MFC 7220 that constantly says "Drum Error" too. No amount of cleaning the corona wire will get rid of it. It is an after market toner cartridge, but I am not sure about the after market drum (I cannot recall - bought them at Rapid Refill). The aftermarket cartridge and the drum both say "Brother". Do you think this is my problem?

  1. Open the front cover.
  2. Press the Options key on the control panel.
    The display will show "REPLACE DRUM - 1.YES 2.NO".
  3. Press 1 to reset the drum count.
  4. Close the front cover.
It happens because Brother decide that we are morons and cannot figure out when a drum is dead and so they make the printer refuse to work after a certain amount of time. This resets their dummy counter.

"Drum error" is because there is dust or any thing like ink on the drum.
After I filled the toner with a other brand dry ink, I got this message.
I carefully checked the drum, I found there was some ink on the drum. So took off the toner part, washed the drum kit with the tap water. wait it dry. There is a rubber roller inside, it will take time to dry.
after the drum kit dry, I rolled the drum, there still something on the drum, I use a tissue paper cleared it.
put the toner back, insert it back to the printer. It is fixed.

I just installed the July 2008 Firmware upgrade and started getting this message.
Never got it before. I have a Brother toner cartridge and drum. No amount of cleaning will get the error to go away. I'm now trying to figure out how to install the old firmware.

    The Brother firmware installer is an online app that automatically chooses the latest firmware. Looks like I am running version 2.4. Problem never occured before I upgraded to this firmware a couple of days ago. Anyone know how to downgrade the firmware?

How do I change the toner HP Officejet 6310 All-In-One

Hi, the officejet 6310 takes ink and can be ordered from most online stores like staples, cartridge world and amazon, All will vary in price, but always stick to the official HP inks although they are more expensive the compatibles do cause problems. below is a link to the cartridges you will need to purchase.

Unfortunately i cannot attach files to this message otherwise i would put the manual on here, which on page 95 shows step by step on how to change the ink cartridges. I can email this to you if you provide an email address for me. below i have copied the instructions from the manual, but there missing illustrations, so might be a bit hard to follow. please let me know if you require any further help.

Replace the print cartridges
Follow these instructions when the ink level is low.
Maintain the HP All-in-OneNote When the ink level for the print cartridge is low, a message appears on
the display. You can also check the ink levels by using the software installed
with the HP All-in-One.
When you receive a low-ink warning message on the display, make sure you have a
replacement print cartridge available. You should also replace the print cartridges
when you see faded text or if you experience print quality issues related to the print

Ink System Failure Oxc18a0401 happened after I installed a new yellow HP ink cartrage. Have gone through pressing buttons according to instructions and cannot find a solution.

The ink system can fail if the cartridges in the printer are installed incorrectly, if the ink in the cartridge is low or out, or if the cartridges are damaged or not correctly vented. Follow these steps to check the cartridges thoroughly and resolve any issues you might find. Step one: Replace empty or low cartridges The error prevents you from checking ink levels using the HP software. However, this error can be caused by a low or empty cartridge. If the Ink Alert message displayed before the error occurred, replacing the cartridge might resolve the issue. Step two: Make sure the cartridges are installed correctly
  1. Turn on the product
  2. Lift the cartridge access door to open it.
  3. To remove the cartridge, press the tab on the front of the cartridge to release it, and then remove it from the slot.
    Do not leave the cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to both the printer and the cartridges.
  4. Examine the vent area, which is located on top of the cartridge, next to the HP logo. If an orange tab is attached to any cartridge, remove it.
  5. If any of the cartridges have clogged vents, use a pin to clean the vents.
  6. Using the colored shape icons for help, slide each cartridge into the correct empty slot, and then press down until the cartridge snaps firmly into place in the slot.
  7. Close the cartridge access door.
  8. Check the product control panel display.
Step three: Use the automatic printhead cleaning utility
REMARQUE: The automatic printhead cleaning utility is available only if you installed the HP software that came with your printer. Follow these steps to use the cleaning utility:

How to Change a Toner Cart in a Brother HL 2040

The Brother HL 2040 laser printer has a toner cartridge that supplies toner to the drum assembly so that the printer can print properly. When the LED on the front of the printer indicates you are low on toner, you will need to replace the toner cartridge to maintain good print quality. Fortunately, the toner cartridge can be replaced without any special tools.

Things You'll Need:

* Replacement toner cartridge (part number TN350 or TN360)
* Paper towel or scrap paper

Grasp the front cover of the printer and pull it toward you to open the toner door. Reach into the printer and grab the combined toner cartridge/drum assembly. Lift up slightly and pull it out of the front of the printer.

Place the cartridge and drum on a paper towel, spare sheet of paper, rag or other surface that can get dirty. Loose toner particles may spill from the cartridge.

Press the blue locking lever on the cartridge/drum unit to unlock the toner cartridge from the drum. Lift the toner cartridge up and away from the drum unit. Dispose of the old toner cartridge in accordance with your local regulations. Seal it in a plastic bag to keep loose toner from spilling.

Gently shake your new toner cartridge back and forth a few times to distribute the toner evenly across the width of the cartridge. Remove the plastic protective cover from the bottom of the cartridge.

Place the new toner cartridge onto the drum unit and press it down gently until it locks into place. The blue locking lever will automatically click into place. Verify that the toner cartridge is securely connected to the drum.

Locate the corona wire cleaner tab at the front of the drum unit. Slide it back and forth several times to improve the print quality of the drum. Set the tab back in the home position when finished.

Slide the combined toner cartridge/drum unit back into the printer and close the front cover.

Need to install new ink

Lift the entire top including the scanner portion until it clicks to stay open by itself (like some vehicle hoods). You should see the print head containing all the ink. It will slide back and forth for a moment, this is normal. Wait until it comes to a stop. Notice any blinking lights below the ink cartridges. If the light is solid, there is enough ink. If the light is blinking you'll need to replace that cartridge for the best print quality. Remove the ink by carefully but forcefully pushing on the tab with one finger and holding the back of the cartridge with other. It should simply slide out. Note the EXACT #'s on the ink cartridges. Right down all the information and the type of printer you have and take it to your local best buy or equivalent store, they will give you the replacement cartridges you need. Unwrap the package and carefully remove the orange tab on the bottom by twisting in the direction shown. (You may want to wear rubber gloves because the ink stains fingers badly.) Carefully but forcefully slide the new cartridge in place of the old and push down until you hear a click. The light under the cartridge should now be solid. Once all carts have been replaced close the lid of the printer and give it a moment to situate. Run a print head alignment to manually align all nozzles for best printing quality. Simply click the head align software button and follow the instructions, quite easy. You should be all set and ready to print!

Solution : Please try the following steps to replace which is very simple and easy. The most important part is to understand and then apply without fear..
1) Turn on the power of the printer
2) Lift the print carriage access door on the front of the unit
Observe : the print carriage will move into the middle of the access area.
3) Release the cartridge to be replaced by pressing down lightly on the top of the carriage latch (You Need to Press Of force Single finger on the top of the Carriage Latch) and then pulling the lower section of the latch forward. Lift the latch.
4) Grasp the sides of the ink cartridge and pull the cartridge out to remove it.
5) NOW by
Holding the cartridge with the printed label up, slide the cartridges, one at a time, into the print carriage.
Insert the black print cartridge (HP 56) into the right side (with the gray latch) and the tri-color print cartridge (HP 57) into the left side (with the blue latch).
6) Latch the cartridge by pulling the lower section of the latch forward and pressing the latch down. When the latch is down, release the lower portion of the latch so that it catches under the tabs. Do not use force or damage might occur.
7) Close the print cartridge access door..

My 8x10 photos have half a blue tint and half a yellow tint. I cleaned the heads and aligned the print cartridges and that didn't make a difference. Working with a HP2610. Thanks! Leslie

Step 1 - Check the ink levels
  1. Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:Open HP Director , select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox
    • Open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel , then right-click your printer icon and choose Properties . Click Printing Preferences . Click the Services tab, then the Service This Device icon.The Printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A cartridge may be running out of ink even if the graphic shows ink remaining (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink. Step 2 - Check the printer settings
      1. In the program being used for printing, click File , and then click Print The Print window opens.Make sure the appropriate product is selected, and then click Preferences or Properties .The Preferences/Properties window opens.Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
      2. Consider modifying some or all of the options in the Printing Shortcuts menu to increase print quality.Print quality : If the quality of the printouts is not acceptable, try increasing the print quality. When I print photos, they have uniform vertical streaks.

Solution: Change the Print Quality Settings (Windows)

Change the Print Quality Settings (Windows) The Quality setting controls how finely ink droplets are placed on the printed page. Depending on the type of paper being used a higher Print Quality setting does not always insure a better print. Print speed will decrease as the Print Quality setting is increased. Follow the instructions below to change the print quality settings in the Canon printer driver for the Windows operating system through a printing application.
  1. Click 'Properties' in the Print dialog box.

    Note: Depending on the Application software, 'Properties' may be displayed as 'Preferences'.

  2. Set the desired print quality in the 'Print Quality' section.

  3. Select 'High', 'Standard', or 'Draft / Fast'.
To set more detailed print quality settings, follow this procedure:
  1. Select 'Custom' and click 'Set'.


  2. In the Set Print Quality dialog drag the slide bar from 'Fast' to 'Fine' to select the print quality.


    Note: There are five options in 'Quality'. However, selectable options are limited depending on the media type.

  3. Select 'Auto', 'Dither', or 'Diffusion' from the 'Halftoning' section.

Color cartridge problem

The first thing I thought of when I read your message, was whether or not your replacement cartridges were produced by HP or by another company. Also, was it a brand new cartridge or a refill? While buying ink cartridges from another vendor or "recycled" cartridges may save a buck or two, you can't always rely on the quality of the printouts they produce. If this is the case, try using an HP color ink cartridge and see if that produces better print quality.

If you are using HP ink cartridges, there might be an issue with the contact between the cartridge and carriage. It's an electrical connection and if the contacts get dirty, it can affect print quality...sometimes drastically.

Unfortunately, doesn't have a web page dedicated just to cleaning these contacts. Fortunately, they included those instructions in the following document:

Replacing the Print Cartridges

When the web page opens, scroll down to the bottom of the page and locate the task, "Fixing error messages that appear after changing a cartridge". This will contain instructions on how to clean those contacts. See if this helps.

Print quality bad

To clear white vertical lines from printed documents follow the steps listed below:

NOTE: The use of non-Brother or generic toner may cause white vertical lines.

Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic drum units and/or toner cartridges, or refill their Brother toner cartridge. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability.
The Brotherlimited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the useof unauthorized third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. First, power OFF the unit for safety. The ON/OFF switch is located on the left, rear side of the unit.

2. Open the scanner cover by pulling the blue lever located below the control panel toward you and lifting the cover. Make sure the cover is completely open.

3. Remove the drum unit by holding each side of the drum by its handles and gently lifting the drum forward (toward) you.

4. Place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposablepaper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner. Make sure thedirections and DR-250 stickers are facing you.

5. With the drum removed from the Brother machine, clean the laser glass. The laser glass is located inside the Brother machine where the drum was located. It is a piece of glass, about 1/2 inch wide and approximately 8 inches long, located on the bottom of the inside. Gently wipe the glass with a clean soft DRY cloth. DO NOT use isopropyl alcoholor any liquid to clean the glass.

6. Gently pull up on the mauve lever to turn the toner cartridge toward you until it stops. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit by gently sliding it out of the drum unit. ***Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

7. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. Then, reset the toner into the drum (be sure it clicks into place). Gently push on the mauve lever to turn the toner cartridge away from you until it stops.

8. With the DR-250 sticker facing you turn the drum upside down. There is a blue tab located on the right side. Slide the blue tab back and forth seven times to clean the corona wire. When finished, make sure the blue tab is locked to the right side of the drum.

9. Reset drum unit in Brother machine. Close the cover securely.

Print the help list to test the unit by pressing the REPORTS key located on the control panel and then (1) on the dial pad.

be replaced.
