Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

I have had this machine for about 15 months. I experienced an issue while the unit was still under warranty wherein the unit would not start and the appliance technician replaced the electronic control board. About a week ago the unit suddenly started to buzz and the interior light would flicker before shutting down on its own after only 2 or 3 seconds. I removed the screws retaining the touch pad/control housing and allowed it to tilt out on the small service support hinge and tried to start the unit so to observe the board. It appeared to me that a small black relay mounted on the electronic control board (with one black and one brown wire attached to it) was "chattering" and thus the buzzing and lights flickering in the cabinet. I decided that it was better to replace the electronic control board than to try and source and replace the relay as there was no guarantee that another bad component on the board was not causing the relay to chatter rather than the relay going bad itself. I have purchased and installed a replacement board; but the issue remains the same! the shop that i purchased the electronic control replacement from understandably does not want the board back. any help on diagnosis of why this relay may be chattering that is external to the electronic control board is most helpful in order that i can pinpoint the part in need of replacement. Thank you very much for you time. Best regards, Mike Power

Hi Mike.

As you just found out, the control unit module (CCU-central control unit) is quite tricky to test replace. The CCU is usually replaced after testing and replacing any other part possibly involved in the problem.

The noisy relay stuck was either trying to open the inlet valve or it was energizing the motor. The first one is more likely, start from inlet testing.

Before testing anything else ensure that there is no water in tub when you started the appliance. If there is residual water in tub, check drain system and pressure switch.

Parts that must be tested in the inlet circuit and mechanism are:

Inlet valve and inlet hoses.
Water level device (pressure switch in washer).
Door switch.

Here broad description of testing involved:

Inlet valve and inlet hoses.
Check that inlet hose is not bent or blocked. Test the inlet valve reading Ohms (ensure valve internal solenoid has continuity). A more complete test can be done reading volts and energizing the valve.

Water level device (pressure switch in washer).
Difficult to test, it is tested reading Ohms with tub full and empty. Part is not expensive and gets usually replaced straight away. Clean pipe attached to sensor and check that sensor is clicking when blowing inside the pipe.

Door switch.
Depending on model, testing is done running a cycle with d.s. contacts jumped or Ohming the switch.

Tested reading Ohms (check continuity) or reading volts.

Problem will likely be something affecting the inlet part of the cycle. If there is no inlet problem, proceed in testing the motor and motor control unit (if present).
Motor is tested reading Ohms or energizing it and observing if it runs. A basic test that can be done is starting a cycle with wiring to MCU (motor control unit) or to motor not connected, and observing if the inlet starts or if an error is returned. If there is a change and symptom is not the humming, then motor or MCU is likely involved.

Depending on the model a faulty button pad may also be causing the problem.

I can be more specific if I know the model number of the appliance, as printed in service tag.

No, I did not realize. The model was listed in ranges. The symptoms described were not matching those of any gas range, I thought you were talking about a washer.

If the unit is a microwave, then problem is not unusual, and the failure is almost never due to a faulty control board. The problem is faulty high voltage diode, capacitor or magnetron. Door lock can also be tested, but this is unlikely the problem. The control pad and control board insulation in some case may also give troubles. I do not think this is the case.

Here a page showing parts and basic troubleshooting.

About Safety and DIY. Microwaves magnetron emits high power radio frequencies that are very dangerous for your health. In your case the magnetron was luckily not working, probably because of faulty diode or capacitor. Normally, if you operate a MW oven partially disassembled you endanger your health. Please do not do any MW testing with power on and oven disassembled.
Talking about H&S I must also mention that the MW oven must go through an RF leakage test whenever a repair requiring disassemblying is carried (see: Pro Lab Professional Microwave Leak Detector)

Our 3 month old machine started making a high pitched squeel the other day during the wash cycle. Now it has started on the rinse cycle on the Quick setting. Model LD149.

I share your frustration with the same machine. Mine is approx 3-4 months old and within the first month i had a leak at the base of the machine which was fixed under warranty. The following month the machine started leaving water in the base of the unit after the wash cycle was complete. LG claim it is an electronic fault in the circuit board. I have refused repair and am now claiming a replacement with them. I don't feel it is acceptable for a machine that's only 3months old to give problems such as these.

The capacitors on the power board that are domed on the top would be the first thing to look for. If you can solder ,it is an fix. If it is under warranty though you could void the warranty if you tamper with it.Bad capacitor on this newer model is unusual. If caps are ok I would Replace the main board.

Macbookair speakers are gone. I have a bootcamp setup for XP but no headsets or speakers. any ideas?

If the speakers are not working, you may have experienced a widespread hardware issue with the MacBook Air. You are not alone. See:

Some users report that replacing the Audio Board Flex Cable corrects the problem, but others report that the correction is only temporary.
If your machine is still under warranty, I would get it back to an Apple2.gif repair facility immediately. If it is not, you will still need to get it to a repair facility, but bring along the above URL and suggest that Apple treat it as a warranty extension issue.

Same issue

Is the computer under warranty, if so take it back to the supplier to have it fixed.
If you try to fix it yourself you will void your warranty.

Sony XBR4 - 46 inch Double Imaging and 1/2 screen dark

We have a SONY XBR4 and we are experiencing the same issues. When you turn on the TV, the right side is dark, then there is shadowing with movements. After about 15 minutes the picture is fine. Sometime shortly after you will get a dark area in the middle of the screen (this doesn't happen all the time). I called SONY, they were not helpful at all. They told me because the TV was not under warranty - it is only a year and a half old, they couldn't do anything for me. We had one of their service people come out to look at it. They basically told us its the panel and it has to be replaced. The cost is $2000. NEVER BUY SONY AGAIN!!! You might as well go and buy a new TV.

Optoma hd72 lamp driver problem

I have had this manufacturer defective HD72 unit for 4 years now. So let me break down this issue as I have experienced it for 3 years.

1. The issue is with the lamp driver(bulb power supply), replacing it will fix the issue, but the new lamp driver you install is also defective and will eventually go out.
2. Replacing the bulb will place less stress on the lamp driver and will temporarily fix the issue as well (this is what I did first because the warranty department, when I was under warranty told me this was the issue but the bulb was not under warranty at the time).
3. I have my unit mounted on the ceiling, upside down. For some reason, turning it right side up extended the life of the lamp driver by 8 months. I have no idea why gravity makes a difference, but it does, try it, it is the quickest/cheapest/easiest thing to try. I read on a web site that it would work, and I thought it was stupid, but it actually did work.

The real problem is that this is a manufacturer defective projector which they do not have non-defective parts to sell you even though they have known about this issue for at least 4 years now, they have moved on and want you to buy a new unit that is not defective instead of fixing this one.

PS3 games freezing isssue

WOW! Firstly, Thank you for the very descriptive description. Secondly, This is a VERY specific issue! I believe that some of the COD issue is "game specific". Like the dialog issues and the lagging. I've seen MANY problems & complaints with COD games. Especially 4. These problems aren't going to go away or get better. But, I'm sure you know that. Since your console is out-of-warranty, I'd strongly recommend contacting "PSR Repairs" You can get a gangster deal on their work.
My console died 14 months after purchase. I bought the extended warranty through WalMart. It almost seems that PS3's run flawless for the year it's under manufactures warranty. Anyway, PSR fixed it. It took about a month, but I got a new hard drive & new Blu Ray lens. It lasted a week & developed a new issue; The picture would pixalate & then I'd get the Yellow Light Of Death! I sent it back for repair. Josh with PSR called to tell me that since the work was starting to surpass the value of the unit, Sony is going to send me a brand new (non-refurbished) unit!
So, my advice is to get your Babe over to PSR asap. . There's really no other way to comfront all the issues you're having! Good luck!

Seems to be some issue with the circuitry. If its still under warranty, I suggest you get it replaced now before you land up with bigger headaches once the warranty runs out (problems usually start once the warranty runs out :)
