1. Make sure iTunes isn't running.
2. Click Start, type regedit, then press Enter.
3. Navigate to this Registry location:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
4; Its better you clean/repair Windows registry with RegInOut.
4. Look in the main pane for a key that refers to iTunes. If you find one, delete it, then exit the Registry.
5. Start iTunes. The offending message should be gone!

It sounds like some of the program has been corrupted/deleted so you should try a free and very useful tool, CCleaner. It can be downloaded at If that doesn't work you may have to go to the install folder and simply delete it, then from CCleaner run the registry cleaner to fix registry and other system problems. Hope this helps and have a nice day!

I have a thinkpad that won't boot it says windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. please re-install a copy of the above...

You need to enter the BIOS and change the boot sequence to boot from CD. You usually have to press either F2 or delete but it should tell you on the boot screen (displayed as enter setup on some) or F12 to enter boot menu.

You should then boot from the CD. Depending on the type of disc you have you may be prompted to press a key to enter the recovery console. If so then do it and in the command prompt window anter CHKDSK /r .(note there is a space between the K and /)

Thjis will check and repair the hard drive and install the missing file without you losing anything.

Reformatted HD , Function keys not working

I don't think so. It could be a hardware problem. Take it to the service center OR if you have any diagnostic utility scan for hardware fault.

Won't Boot - System File Missing or Corrupt

have you tried working in dos and copying the folder fromt he recovery partition?
you could also see about getting a cd from a friend. For that you would have to go to someone using the same OS, then go to My Control Panel, and in there, tell it to make a boot disk.

if neither of these work, then i suggest getting an external drive hooked up to save the information and then, unfortunately, re-installing.

Ipod nano problem

hello blair,I Have my own I-pod so I hope this will re asure you. First I think you should restore your I tunes as long as your brother has your songs too. Then ask him to create a CD of all your songs, which is not hard at all. then take the CD and open I-Tunes. Place the CD into your hard drive and I-Tunes should pick up the CD. Then download the content of the CD onto I-Tunes. You Will Now have all your songs on I-Tunes like before. Now plug in your I-Pod and continue like It's the first time you have pluged in your i-pod! hope this helps! Rosebetts xxx

Adobe installation

Hooray! Found the solution. Seems the problem is you must have the Adobe Reader 7.0.9 installer on your system to be able to install 8.1.1. You can d/l version 7.0.9 (which includes the installer) here:
Install the whole thing, then you should be able to install your 8.1.1, which will remove the 7.0.9 version in the process, but will use its installer.
