Man, you have a job ahead of you. First, if the unbreakable shaft is cracked or broken, you will have to replace it, for it will leak into the motor too. If your unit has the sonar sensor in the front and it has had water in it, the unit can corrode severely and need a lot of parts besides seals. The wiring to the sonar runs in a protective shield bonded to the magnet housing and one of the long screws holds it in there. Remember to take the wiring to the sonar out AFTER you remove the big motor feed wires, and replace it BEFORE you reinstall the red and black cables. Some grease seems to ensure the o'rings slide on metal parts during reassembly rather than tear. It's quite a job.

Sure can! Chances are if you need brushes, you should do a clean up of the motor as well. If there has been no water intrusion then the job is fairly easy, if water has gotten into the motor you'll need to spend some time and elbow grease cleaning it out . Always replace the seals, they come in a kit and are inexpensive. At a repair shop average repair bill shouldn't be more than $70-90 for this including parts. Parts can be purchased here:

I have to manually turn the prop. to get the Minn Kota electric motor to work. Once it gets going it works fine. What is the cause?

I have an all terrain 70 that would not work intermittently. I disassembled the motor and discovered that the brushes wer hung in the brush housing. The housing is clean and the brushes are in great shape. It appeared that the geometry of the brush spring is just right to make it hang at that prticular position. I freed the spring and could not recreate the problem. Reassembled with new gaskets and seals and all is good.

How to get wires out of the shaft?

    carefully drill out
the screws the are not removable to remove the cover. you will have to take apart the motor housing marking the outside for orientation for reassembly. this is critical as it could run backwards if improperly reassembled. you will need a seal kit for the motor as well. the wires that go to the coil pack in the nosecone are not removable. call the 800 number on the upper part of the motor for minn kota to ask any questions and to order new screws and a seal kit and any other needed parts. make sure motor is not attached to the battery at any time you are working on it. good luck.

We have boat that came with trolling motor, boat not used in 5 years what should we do to service the motor/minn kota 40at before we put in water we hooked to battery it spun and quit?? not sure what to...

My guess is the motor has leaked water into the lower motor assy (behind the prop). and needs to be cleaned up and the brushes replaced.
    here's a schematic:
    Edge 40
You can try this to check for water leakage:-
    1) disconnect from power supply
    2) remove the prop
    3) you will see 2 bolt heads behind where the prop was. Remove ONLY ONE of them for now.
    4) if you see the bolt (it's about 8" long) is covered in what looks to be blask, oily/watery or rusty condition then you know that you'll need to overhaul it.
    5) if it IS the motor assy, remove the other bolt and disassemble everything noting their location.
    6) I would recommend replacing the brushes Part# 188-052 and the seal kit 2883460.

My endura 30 lower unit was filled with water and mud/rust. It was working all speeds before I opened it up. I had to hit the lower unit sometimes to get it to spin. The armature contacts have many pits,...

You *may* be able to save the armature (about $45) by using some fine emory cloth to buff it back to life.
The brushes, seal kit, bearing, etc are about a $35-$40 bill. To have it done in-shop would be approx. $80 with labour.

    Good luck in your repair!

Minn kota all terrain 65 problems

Here's a schematic for your motor:
    Max 70
My guess is you are correct in it being the brushes.
More times than not the motor will have leaked from in behind the prop are. What happens is a peice of monofilament line floating around in the water gets caught behind the prop and cuts the seals up, allowing water intrusion.
To remedy you'll need to clean up the entire bottom motor and replace the brushes, bearing and seal kit too. Clean up the commutator (copper area, now probably black in color, where the brushes ride on) with fine emory paper and you should be good to go!
    Best of luck

Solution- Take the cover off the Deckhand 35 by Minn Kota. Inside is a motor drive. Remove the cover plate held in place with 4 screws. inside are nylon gears, most likely broken. The gears can be replaced with a Minn-Kota Deckhand Gear Repair Kit.
I found mine on the web at Northland it's about $24.00 for the kit, plus shipping.
    Good Luck!
