Have a Dell Inspiron 5150. Got a virus that wipped the hard drive and trying to reload. Would go with the Dell operation system disk so I wipped the disk completely. When trying to install Windows XP all goes well till i get to the format part and it will not format. Message, does not recognize hard drive. Hard drive registers and shows it size and that it is unparticianed. Help.

Hi, I format so many laptops the description of your problem is the hard drive problem. My suggestion is to replace that hard drive you have. You can try and try to reformat the hard drive sometime it might work but later you might run in to a hard drive problem again. The best way to solve is to replace the hard drive and save time.. If you have hdd enclosure open the hdd enclosure remove the hard drive to the enclosure and put your laptop hard drive and plug in to a usb on a working PC desktop and listen if there is a clicking sound your hard drive is gone. I hope this will help you solve your problem Have a Happy New Year... HRH

Was the hard drive contain any previous operating system? If it was, then you need to chose "Delete the volume" and "Format", and let's see the result after you reinstall the Windows 7.

When i start up my dell laptop it says disk erro so i preesed diagnose and it said error code 2000-0146 how can i fix this?

Two possible causes
  • Hard drive itself is bad (If this is the case you will need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the OS and any software)
  • You have a nasty bootsector virus (Format the drive and reinstall the operating system and any software)
Try to format and reinstall the operating system and if it works great if not then you know the hard drive needs to be replaced.

Main cause of the problem is a corrupted operating system which can be cause by a virus or a defective hard disk or a defective memory module. First to try is to replace your memory with a certified good one. If the problem persists, Try to reinstall you windows using your CDRom. If there still the problem, replace hard disk.

Your system has suffered an unrecoverable error. Either vital operating system files have been corrupted, deleted or overwritten or your hard drive has failed. I suggest reformatting the drive and reloading the operating system from scratch. This can also be cause by some virus infections currently in the wild ( viruses that are currently circulating the internet) so make sure you boot from a system disk and reformat the drive or drives from this boot disk. Sorry but you have very few chances of a successful recovery from this without reinstalling your operating system.

Hi what keys do i press to format a dell inspiron 1150 laptop

If you mean wiping the hard drive & starting fresh I would do a low level format. This will make the hard drive as if it was new from the store, but you will have to reload Windows & other software. You should have a good knowledge of computers before doing this or ask a friend who knows computers to help.

Dell inspiron 5150 primary hard drive disk 0 not found

You may find that either the cable is not connected properly or is faulty, or the worse case the mother board has problems (driver, chips, breakages)
May even be a power supply problem, as the power supply has many output points and different voltages that the HDD power out may have blown. If it has then the rest of the system will appear to be ok.
So first off, check the cables connections on the motherboard, and look for any breaks in the cables, and if you have a power meter of some sort check the power connection, or plug in another power connector, the ones with the same end are generally the same power outputs. The ribbon cable for the HDD should have 2 sockets for HDDs and you must connect your HDD to the end one.

I think you must reload the operating system and buy yourself a GOOD virus/malware protection software. If you do not have the recovery disc set contact the customer service number for your computer manufacturer to buy the set. Here is a link to the Dell support website. Support Dell US

Dell Inspiron 5150

This can be caused by a bad memory chip, but most of the time the hard drive has failed or bad sector that it's unable to read from. If your machine has a diagnostic or hard drive test in the bios, run it. Some also have a memory test that you can run. If yours does have these and any part of the hard drive or memory test fails, the there's your problem. If you don't have these, the start by removing the memory and trying them one at a time. If this doesn't work, then reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. If you have any problems during or after the format and reload, then the hard drive has failed and will need replaced.
