Hello there,

This means your Samsung phone cannot acquire any signal from your Sim/Network provider. Try to insert a different sim card and see if it acquires any signal. If it does not work, you might want to just reset the phone to Factory Defaults. To do this, just key in

*2767*3855#

The phone will reset and restart. If it turns off and doesnt start itself, turn it on. Then try inserting the sim card again.

Please let me know if this works so I can assist you further. Thank you for using FixYa.

Happy New Year!

These are the troubleshooting and resolution steps for customers who see "Emergency Calls Only" or similar messages on their wireless phones. This message normally indicates that the customer lacks a wireless service provider/account or the device/SIM is not recognized.

  1. Power-cycle the device.
    1. Power off the phone. While the SIM card is out of the device, clean the SIM card contacts by following these additional steps:
      1. Gently wipe the SIM with a soft cloth.
      2. Clean the gold contacts on the SIM card using a pencil eraser.
      3. Carefully remove all eraser residues from the SIM card.
      4. Carefully replace the SIM card back into its cavity.
      5. Check for Liquid damage; refer to Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) Log.
      6. Once the SIM card is secure, replace the battery and back cover and power on the phone.
  2. Place an outbound call.
  3. If the test call is successful, end the call.
  4. If the test call is not successful and it is possible, test the SIM card in another known working device.
    • To ensure accurate results, the test device must be the same technology as the device in question (UMTS, GSM, etc).
    • Ensure the test device is the same type of device (smartphone to smartphone, non-smartphone to non-smartphone).
  5. If the test call is successful with the SIM in a different phone,
  6. If the test call is not successful, the SIM needs to be replaced. Or you can call at&t so they can give you a free sim card. it depends on the situation.
( i hope i answer your question )

Allows emergency calls only

Is subscription paid up to date?
Check that your Sim Card is in place?
Get a hold of your provider.
Another person suggests:You might be set on the wrong network type. In my area O2 doesn't have a 3G (CDMA) mask so my galaxy S3 automatically switches to a network that does for "Emergency Calls" - which means your on another providers network just you can only make emergency calls.
What I have to do is force my galaxy S3 into GSM (2G) networks. So then it will connect to O2 mask and I can text/phone as normal.
Go to Settings, More Settings, Mobile Networks > Network Mode. Click GSM. See if that helps. If it does then go to "GSM/WCDMA Auto"
If not then you may not have any of your providers network masks nearby (go to another location to check this). Or the provider is having problems (check their website status page). I don't think a factory settings would help

Why emergency calls will work if we r having no network.?what is the reason?

In emergency situation all the available networks can be used - even if they are not your own. But you can use them to call only the emergency number.

Dailing Emergency Numbers.

You generally do need a simm card or the phone will not fire up. Emergency numbers are accessible from all networks in range whether you have credit or are connected to that network or not as part of an ongoing agreement between all network providers. Hope this helps.

A "fixya" rating would be great for my time to give you this advice. :)
