If your pilot won't stay on than I would expect that the thermocouple is bad. That would be the first thing I would change.Thank you

The Pilot light will not stay lit

You will need to replace thermocouple or you might get by for awile by cleaning old one by lightly sanding tip and making sure it is positioned in center of pilot flame. When you light pilot hold down on pilot button until you can see the tip of thermocouple glo red. If after cleaning the pilot won't stay lit after you release button then you need to replace it. Remove thermocouplefrom gas valve and pull back on it to remove it from pilot assembly. You can buy universal replacements at most hardware stores. Try to get one at least as long as the old one. Good luck.Ihope this helps you. Thanks.

Pilot light wont stay onfor outside pool heater. Gas co made a service call & relit the pilot light it went out again 4 days later.

There is a thermo couple that keeps the gas on. The pilot light bracket has a small screen where the gas comes through that can get clogged and cause the pilot light to burn away from the thermo couple which would cause it to think the flame has went out and shut the gas off. Or the thermo couple has went bad itself. If you try cleaning the screen use canned air and gently blow it through the orfice once you have taken it off. If you don't know what a thermo couple is or looks like here's a picture of a generic one that will give you an idea. Usually there's a bracket that holds this in place. f1b528a.jpg

How do you shut down

the pilot light always stays on, its designed to allow your heater to turn on by itself without you needing to light a match every time. if the pilot light is burning you have nothing to worry about. its when the pilot light goes out that a small amount of gas leaks into the room. and by small i mean smaller than a hand held lighter... if you still want to shut the entire thing down you could turn off the gas line feeding the heater or possibly the whole house, otherwise the pilot light will stay on. as far as the actual heater turning off, thats probably controlled by some sort of thermostat somewhere. if you set the temp to very cold it should stay off. if that doesn't work then you may need a new thermostat.

are you holding button down long enough for thermal coupler to warm up? after pilot lights up, don't immediately let go of button for about 15 to 20 seconds then let go and pilot should stay on. If not, you may need a new thermal coupler for that water heater

Wall heater pilot light

As it turns out there is an emergency shut-off valve connected to the vent that was triggered by high winds. The reset button is hidden on the upper left hand corner of the unit (as you are facing it) behind a small grill on the side of the outer casing. Logic tells me that it's there so in the event of a clogged vent you don't fill your house up with carbon monoxide. One push on the reset button allowed the pilot to stay on and therefore the heater to fire up.

Pilot light won't stay lit

Look for dust and lint. Look for them in places where gas should be freely flowing. I had a similar problem with an Empire Corcho wall-mounted propane ceramic catalyst heater. First it was the pilot light, then the #2 ceramic mantle. After horsing around with the gas lines and pressure regulators and trying to re-aim the pilot, it all turned out to be dust and lint in the gas passages. A little dust bunny in the brass pilot tube gave me a pilot light the shape and color of a banana. One puff of compressed air, and I got back my razor-sharp pilot. And some dust in the chimney of the #2 burner kept it burning blue/yellow and blistering paint off the upper surfaces of the heater. A bit of cleaning with a shop-vac put that right. "Passive" heaters are very much prone to this sort of problem because they rely on convection currents (i.e. LOW velocity) to get the job done. Convection currents are notorious dust collectors, as in COBWEB CITY.
