Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I was adding a 512MB card to a Compaq Presario that has an ASUS K8S-LA (or Compaq motherboard: Salmon-GL6E) and discovered what looks like a heat sync loose inside the case. I can see where is was connected to a part of the board that is next to the large CPU Heat sink. What is this part and how does if effect the motherboard? How do I reattach it to the motherboard?

Since writing about this problem, I have continued the research and discovered the heat-sink was protecting the SiS 760 North Processor chip set. The fix as reported in the article suggested removing the motherboard and rigging new clips, soldering them into place and then replacing the heat-sink (after removing, cleaning and reapplying the heat-sink grease) Now I'm wondering if there might be an easier fix - super glue plus the heat-sink grease? Evidently the processor has never over-heated because it is normally left on 24-7 and seems to be operating fine.

Please advise regarding the glue and grease.

Clip #2 pulled loose from the motherboard and the spring loaded heat sink pulled loose from the SiS 760 chip on the motherboard. I reapplied heat sink compound to the center of the heat sink and applied J-B KWIK Weld bond to hold the heat sink to the chip. Hopefully, it will work. This was on an HP computer with ASUS K8S - LA motherboard

The ASUS K8S-LA main board has a variety of chips on it, however only the CPU is large enough to justify a dedicated heat sink.

The most likely location that your rogue heat sink is came from is your video card's processor. I'm lead to believe this for 2 reasons- 1) you say that the CPU heat sink is still in place, and it is the only heat sink on the main board, and 2) the location you described as to where you found the heat sink would be consistant with it falling off the video card (located in the AGP slot, directly below the cpu with the external ports facing left).

Below is a link on the HP website to the layout / photos of your main board which were referenced in this solution

This is actually very serious if it is the case as it could lead to rapid failure of your video card (or whatever card it goes to if that is the not the location). There are several guides available on the internet for "cleaning" heat sinks which will serve your purpose of reinstalling yours once you find the location.

Hope this information was helpful, please don't forget to rate my solution.

This actually the heat sink from the onboard video processor. I have the same problem though I have no idea how long it has been like this as by now it is an older computer. Pin 2 holding the heat sink has been pulled out, and I can not find mine anywhere. Ill likely just leave my pc on its side until it dies as it is older and we have a newer family laptop to use over it.

Installing new motherboard, processor, mem, and video adapter. Powers on but no post.

If the beep is a very high pitched tone, turn off the computer. Your CPU is overheating. The thermal paste may not be spread correctly on the CPU or the heat sink isn't properly installed.

Otherwise, it's probably a memory error. This machine takes 2 GB of memory as 2 single GB memory sticks. Try booting the machine with only one DIMM installed. Try each stick individually before getting replacement memory.

I hope this helps.

[Let's take a look at a Motherboard Diagram, that fits the technology of that Asus K8S-LA (Salmon) mobo,

CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply - Processor - for short.

As you can see the Northbridge chip, of the motherboard chipset; handles the Faster capabilities of a computer.
Processor, Ram Memory, and HIGH-speed graphics.

HIGH-speed graphics is AGP, and PCI Express.
A graphics card inserted into a PCI slot; or using Integrated Graphics; is NOT high-speed graphics.

The Southbridge chip of the motherboard chipset, handles the Slower capabilities of a computer.

A) The PCI bus. (And Integrated Graphics)
B) IDE bus
C) SATA bus
D) USB bus
E) Ethernet bus
F) Audio (Sound)

The Northbridge chip of the motherboard chipset, is a SiS 760.
The Southbridge chip of the motherboard chipset, is a SiS 964.

I have a Compaq Presario SR1475CL that I installed Win 7 Pro on and there were no drivers for the onboard integrated LAN. I have no connection to the internet to use Windows Update to download any drivers....

Oftentimes the driver for the integrated LAN is rolled up into the motherboard driver. Try downloading that driver, putting on some sort of portable media (USB flash drive would be idea), and execute it on the Presario.

I would search the motherboard name (K8S-LA, if I'm not mistaken).

My heat sink for chipset popped out of K8S-LA ASUS motherboard. What can I upgrade in it,s place?

Below is a link from with a list of possible heatsink/cooler fans that will fit your machine. If you don't run heavy duty applications (ripping DVD's serious gaming) then a basic heatsink will work fine. If you do burn a lot of DVD's or are into serious, graphics intensive gaming, you may want to upgrade to a better unit. Newegg Heatsink

Need the pin assignments for the mother board

On most motherboards the front panel connections are printed in the connectors on the motherboard. When you connect the various LED indicators and when you power up and they do not light up then just switch the connectors around, because they are are polarized.
You can go to the motherboard WEB site (ASUS) to download a manual, the manufacturer and model number is printed on the motherboard.
