Thanks for that, I do suspect the processor and am waiting for a
replacement to test. I suspect that the overheating problem may have
cooked the chip and there are "Heat" marks on the chip case on the
side furthest from the heat sink. Will keep you posted.

Well Narrowed down the problem to the processor ZIF socket on the mother board. Have dismantled it and it looks like some contacts have come unstuck or broken . These are at the corners of the socket and may be due to the board flexing over time when picking up the machine. Problem is, I dont know how to replace this socket. The contacts are too small for me to repair so I need to replace the socket. But how do I get it off the board? Have removed the heat pad off the back of the board and this revealed that the socket is surface soldered and not through soldered ho hum ... Anyone any Ideas or solutions?? In hope - Wid

This happens to mine often. I found restarting it and powering up an external connected VDU it would then start up and pressing Fn F9 eventually got the screen back. A cool day and powering up the VDU just at the right time works. I can then use it until it overheats again. 2 months or 2 mins depending on the weather. I'm going to buy a new machine soon.

This sounds to be an issue with the processor. Try removing the processor, blowing it off, and reseating it firmly and properly. Put it back together and see if this cures it. Keep in mind that a malfunctioning processor can cause an overheating problem just as easily as a fan or heatsink.

I don't know "where" you worked on it, but I hope you were'nt standing on carpet when you did.If everything is connectrd the way it was, then the only thing I can think of is ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) damage.

Screen is staying blank after start up

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :-

Toshiba Satallite 1415 wont boot

Sounds like maybe the hard drive is not hooked up or not hooked correctly. Tey unhooking it and re hooking it back up.
If it worked before but not now it has to be somethign is not hooked ack up correctly and a cd will not help.
If Its not the hard drive I would suggest taking it back apart to the point you had it before and reasembling it again but make sure all connections are tight, especially the ones where you slide the flat wire in and then lock it.
It has to be a loos connection some where.
that or the timing of the failure is just coincedental with the disasembly and one has nothing to do with the other.  If thats the case then you have a different problem.
If it is just a fluke and you just have failure I would suggest downloading a program you can install to cd like windows live and then boot to the cd.  once booted to cd you can access the hard drive and fix any problems with directory structure.
