Chances are the heat sink is clogged with dirt, the computer needs to be taken apart and the heat sink needs to be removed from the processor and cleaned, also! the conductive thermal grease needs to be removed and fresh thermal grease applied, make sure the fan and fins are cleaned.

The fan may be running too slow (faulty bearing) or the fan and heat sink assembly may be clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spinsfreely, if not replace the fan. If the fan and heat sink is clogged withdust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use acan of compressed air to do this.

Sony vaio pcg-71318L overheating

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

Notebook fan is not running and unit is getting hot

the fan vanes are clogged, this may happen if you have pets or live in a humid region.
take the unit apart and remove the heat sink from the laptop, get some arctic ice silicone from a computer store and apply an amount equal to that of a piece of rice to the processor (after first cleaning of the residue on the heat sink), clean the cooling vanes out and replace the heat sink, put the unit back together and the unit should not overheat again.
The silicone will take a while to solidify to the optimum.
