Question about NetGear WGR614 Wireless Router

1 Answer

I don't know where else to turn, I've tried everything, but here it goes. My PC is using a netgear WNDA3100 wireless receiver, while another PC in another room has the router; a netgear WGR614v9. Since installing the receiver it has had problems detecting the router, but eventually began to work with some occasional easy-fix glitches. But as of a week ago, my receiver cannot connect to any internet connection, much less than the router that is less than 20 feet away. I also receive different error messages each time, though the most common is "Cannot connect to hidden network XX", sometimes it is "Problem detected with device" though it does not tell me which device has the problem. I have done every trick in the book to correct the problem. 1. Reset the router 2. Reset the router and modem 3. Restart the computer, as well as repeating steps 1 and 2 4. Disconnect then reconnect the receiver 5. Make sure both the wireless and security settings are correct in the routerlogin. 6. Manually typing in passphrase 7. Triple checked to make sure IP and MAC addresses are correct on both systems I list everything down so that I do not wait for an email to tell me to make sure it's plugged in or tell me to do something I already tried. A couple of things of note as well, although my main error is the "Hidden Network" issue, it is not hidden on my list of connections. My signal strength is never less than 4 bars and it does show up on my list of connections. Also, every light on the router is green except for one, the check mark right next to the power symbol is neither green nor amber, simply unlit. I am not sure if this is relevant or not but I hope this information helps. Thank you for your time

You have tried the all things I would have done.
The LED next to the Power LED is the Test LED, it blinks when the router is first turned ON the goes out. If the LED stays on then there is a fault.
One thing I would try is to reset the router back to the default settings and then setup the router again.
Click on this link if you need the installation manual.

Which wireless adapter should I use

If you mean a USB adapter, I like the Netgear WNDA3100 VERSION 2 (Version 1 doesn't work). Dish is also using these too branded with their name on it if you can find one of those? The only problem with them, if it matters, is that they have a big housing on them. So if the USB port is in a small tight place they won't fit. Although, I haven't tried to pry the housing off? It's usually a small card underneath it, I just don't know about the Netgear specifically?

Blu-Ray players are pretty finicky about which wireless adapters they'll accept. Check your Blu-Ray player's manual to see if the WNDA3100 is supported.

WNDA3100 smart wizard wont open

There are a few different versions of the WNDA3100 drivers. You can find out which version of the drivers you need by checking on the network adapter, it will say WNDA3100v1, WNDA3100v2, WNDA3100v3, etc.

I had the same problem when I was trying to use v3 drivers on a v2 adapter. I found the right drivers on netgear here:
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19881/~/wnda3100v2-software-version-2.0.0.1

I struggled with this for a few hours so I hope this will help someone else.

ubuntu's wireless support is flakey, but it improved with Ubuntu 9.04

I had a similar problem in Ubuntu 8.10 with Netgear WNDA3100. Recommend that you install Ubuntu 9.04 -- to get your Netgear wireless-N USB device working.

Problems with WiFi netgear WNDA3100

the drivers should be installed in windows 7 by default, their so called "smart wizard" has some compatibility issues with windows 7, I get it to load up and it will shut down or glitch out. What I did was uninstall the downloaded driver and use the default windows drivers, flipped the switch off to my built in G wifi adapter and the netgear automatically kicked in and took over as the default wireless adapter.

To isolate the issue. please install the adapter on another computer. If the other computer does not detect the adapter then that means the adapter is faulty.

Let me know the results.
