Hooking up external dvd player to combo

I read a column here where you advised someone to hook up an external dvd player to tv/dvd/vcr combo that the dvd player was not working in. I wanted to know if you could tell me how to do that? I hooked mine up and it makes a loud noise when I turn it on.

I have the same problem.
