My hard drive is not being read by any of my USB cords. I started using my hard drive at the beginning of this year and i was using the longer of the USB cords that it came with, and only last week i realised that there was a shorter one the USB 2.0! None fits into the hard drive now and i'm trying to retrieve my files and data of my drive and i don't know anyway to do so since no USB is working!!!! How do i get my data and files removed from the hard drive on to my laptop which has Windows 7, without the connection of a USB port?????? HELP! Could someone pleassssssssse help me! Thanks :)

Ok! The hard drive is a Western Digital- My Passport Essential! I belive it might be an internal problem with the part for the USB to connect! And I don't hear any spinning noise anymore.... I used to hear the sound together with the light on the hard drive indicating that it's connected but since this problem occured there is no connection from the USB to the hard drive unfortunately!!!

Try it on someone else's computer, to eliminate a problem with yours. Note, if it's a small portable drive you may need a usb lead with 2 plugs at the computer end to provide enough power. Unfortunately you haven't given enough info and you don't state what type of drive it is. . It could be that the drive has died, can you hear it spinning? Is it making any noises?

The light on the hard drive turns on,but i can not see it in 'my computer'

Try using a different pc and usb cord. If neither work the the usb interface probably went bad so the drive no longer will communicate via standard usb connection. If this is the case you wil need to disassemble the case in order to access the hard drive or take it to be serviced depending on your technical skills.

It sounds like the motherboard is causing the usb ports to malfunction by allowing power surges into the power input to the ports. You maybe should try a powered usb hub to power your hardware or you may face motherboard replacement

Computer is not recognizing my external hard drive

If the light won't blink, there could be problem with the power source. Do scanning hardisk for errors manually ( take off the hardisk from the case, assemble it on other PC Desktop)

Cannot Be read by my PC...Looks Dead From here

Try another PC, see if it can see the drive. Hard drives seem to have about a 3 year lifespan, doesn't mean they can't last longer, I just wouldn't trust the drive to last much longer. I use Acronis Disk Director to check my hard drives and partitions.

I can't see my mac lacie ext hd on windows pc! Any software available? Thanks in advance

you can always goto , there you can find
all available drivers for their products , ?mac both
windows and mac use the same types of HDD
either an Ultra ATA or a SATA and even the new solid state , I have never heard of just a mac HDD
a good rule of thumb is to trouble shoot from the beginning like when a light doesn't work the first
thing you check is the bulb . start from the power cord , then the USB cord & USB hub , I'll be here
waiting for your reply

My WD hard drive shows up on windows explorer but when I click on the icon it states that I need to format the drive in order to read it. I have loads of precious data on this hard drive. How can I...

I had the same problems with mine. It got to the point that the drive wouldn't even spin up all the time. I got lucky one day, and it did spin up & I was able to get my data off the drive. Counting this unit, it is my fourth WD HDD failure! Needless to say, there are no more WD drives in my house!! Are you plugged into a "native" USB port? Try that if you are using a hub. Also try unplugging the USB cord into the unit and plugging it back in again alternating with turning it on and off using the big button on the front. It isn't just a HDD in a case. There is a weird electronics board inside that connects and controls the drive. NOT a regular IDE or SATA connection, so you can't just take it out and hook it up using an IDE to USB and power supply to get your data off. Do other USB accessories run OK on your USB ports? Sometimes THEY get strange and won't work or won't work correctly. Disconnect the "My Book" USB cord, shut your computer off, pull the power cord completely out of your computer, press the start button on your computer for 5 seconds. Put the power cord back in, start your computer and reconnect the USB to the My Book. Doing the above will usually fix the USB ports that have gotten corrupted for whatever the reason. You might also try running it on another computer and see if you get the same results. Hope any of this will help. Let me know if it does, and please rate me accordingly. Good luck....I know all too well what it is like to loose data.

I have a 600gd external Hard drive. I says its connected to the computer and its working, the light is on and everything and i can also hear it. But my computer isnt able to read it

have you formatted the drive yet?  If this is the first time you are using it, you have to format it.  If not, shut down the computer, unplug the USB and power cable from the hard drive...wait 2 minutes.  Plug the usb into the hard drive and the computer...then plug in the power cord to the hard drive.  Wait 30-45 seconds and then start your computer.  Hopefully that should fix your issues.

No external drive icon on desk top

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!
