It could possibly have on of the idler pullies froze up or close to it which will make engine labor hard just trying to make belt rotate.

When I engage the blades then cutting grass, the engine starts to run rough. Disengage blades runs fine.

Carb may need adjusted a little if engine is sputtering. Governor spring etc. May have a clogged fuel line or carb.(had that to happen to me when gov. kicked in not enough gas flow to run smoothly). New plug? Air filter clean? Fresh gas? (not questioning your experience but adds up). If engine is missing, may need these things. If it only does this when blades engaged and does not do it climbing a hill or something else putting a load on engine try the next thing. Hope it is not a bearing on the deck but check that out by turning OFF the engine, and turn blades by hand and see if a bearing may be going bad. PLEASE, DISCONNECT THE SPARK PLUG BEFORE DOING THIS or you may need an ambulance also... lol.. Just some ideas to kick around until I think about it a little bit more. Also, most on here would like to see the make and model and engine name and horse power.. that would help too. Thanks for asking. Good Luck.

Blade will not engage

There must be:
  • Someone in the seat
  • Not in park/idle.
  • A working blade start switch
  • A non defective PTO clutch.
  • Undamaged blade and greased blade bearings.

I have a Bolens Model 13AM762F765 38inch cut 15.5 HP twin blade lawn tractor. It runs like a champ as long as I do not engage the blades or put it in reverse. It will stall if either of these two things...

Sounds like a safety switch. Just as there is a safety switch under the seat that shuts mower off if you get off seat while engine is running, theres also safety switches for, pto, drive, reverse, etc. I would get a multimeter and look for switches under chassis and test with meter for continuity.

The 12.5 murray 38 in runs fine until i engage the blades, while engaged the mower runs fine for about five seconds then starts to spit and sputter.once i disengage the blades it runs smoothly again

The problem is in the carb. First try using some bottled fuel system cleaner at a heavier dose than for a car, but be aware that too much may damage the carb. Then run the fuel out and fill with fresh and try again. When you engage blades and it sputters try to throttle down until it runs smooth and then slowly bring engine back up to mowing speed. You should be able bring it up and mow. Run out the fuel tank. If unable to do this trick and get the fuel system cleaner through you will need to have the carb. taken apart and cleaned thoroughly.

Motor chokes and misses under moderate load and loses power

Sounds to me as tho it might need a carburetor adjustment, providing there is an adjustment screw on the carb. Sounds like the engine is running a bit lean. Did this problem occur right after the carb cleaning, or was it there in advance? Is there a fuel filter that might be clogged?
