Leethmsn,

You have a classic Reddy Heat problem. They use an air bleed system to determine the fuel pump pressure. As the filter clogs the pressure changes and the symtoms you described appear. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4124129-yearly_maintenance_reddy_heaters which explains the problem, how to fix it and where to get the parts.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Heater lights but burns 5 or 10 seconds then goes out sounds like fuel to me.I burn Diesel fuel in it

Maybe there is a sensor that determines if the fuel is burning. If that sensor fails, the fuel may shut off after a few seconds if that sensor fails to detect the heat properly. Some kind of safety device to prevent fuel dumping if it stops burning, perhaps.

My gas Dearborn model#drc40mc pilot light stays lit.when I turn to on position and heater comes on , it burns high , even on low number setting, then after few seconds goes out taking pilot out also

clean/replace the flame sensor. Your heater doesn't recognize that it has lit and continues to try and light the gas. when the sensor doesn't tell the 'brain' it lit? it shuts down the gas for safety reasons.

New blue flame heater, everything is hooked up, gas is going to unit, I have a natural gas hookup, in the correct port, knob is turned and locked into the NG position but unit wont light. There is gas...

do you have the pilot light burning if not then you have to get in burning first
Put knob in pilot position push down and hold for at least 30 seconds or longer then if there is an igniter push and release it push and release till pilot light comes on .Continue to hold pilot light button down for another 10 seconds or so, release pilot button and turn button to on or up a number or set T stat
Main flame should come on and burn

Sweeting from top of heater

Water on top of gas heater can be caused by poor venting, or inadequate combustion.
Make sure water is not coming up from under tank top, indicating tank leak requiring tank replacement.
Have a plumber look at problem to make sure home is not filling with deadly, odorless CO gas.
Inspect pipes that they are not corroded and covered with condensate.
Check that roof cap is in place.
Let heater fire and burn for a few moments so the fire is going good, and then light match just outside the draft hood on top of heater. Blow out match and see if smoke draws immediately into vent and upward.

Fumes

Generally a kerosene heater will put out a strong smell for a few minutes after it is first lit, and for a few minutes after you put it out. Generally, it will be much stronger after it's extinguished. I usually extinguish mine and immediately set it out on the concrete porch to keep the smell out of the house.

Opening a window for a few minutes right after lighting the heater will help with the fumes at startup.

If your heater is constantly putting off fumes, even after burning for a little while, then it may be time to burn the wick dry. This should be done every few months anyway as general maintenance.

First, siphon all the fuel from the tank. You will need to disassemble the heater and gain access to the top of the wick. Raise the wick to it's highest point and use your fingers or a flat nosed pair of pliers to break up the hard black tar coating on the top of the wick. The smaller you can break the coating, the faster it will burn off. Once thats done, reassemble your heater, raise the wick to it's highest point and light it. It will probably burn for an hour or two because it will first burn all of the fuel soaked up in your wick, but then it will burn off the tar. Finally, it will go out.

After this, you should be ok, to refill your heater and relight as normal.

If you find when you disassemble it that the wick has a hard tar ring down inside, you may have a hard time breaking that up and cleaning it. It is possible... But I would probably just replace the wick.

Sound like the blower motor is burning out. after it has run for a while, shut off the power to your furnace, then fell the motor. if the motor is really hot(be careful) then its starting to burn out. This is a very common symptom of this.
