Question about Delta 40 680 Electric Scroll Saws

Open Question

I have an older Delta 40-640 Variable speed scroll saw. The motor is running erratic in all the speeds. Took the switch housing off and noticed a pc board, can I replace a particular part on it or do I need a whole new pc board.

Hey fellow NZer, Yup, that's indeed possible, almost ANY motor can be speed controlled, if it's NOT too big, one can simply use a 100/150 Watt Light Dimmer, (the bigger the better) to do so, bigger motors will require a proper speed controller... PWM one...
One can get kits for speed controllers from Jaycar, or **** Smith too, Radio Spares if you have a dollar to spare, they seem to charge like wounded bulls, but their stuff is always available and always works.
I doubt if you would need a microcontroller, as the load is only 65Watts, as it's current draw is under an Amp.
I imagine that the Light Dimmer will suffice... Usually though you need to upgrade the heatsink on the Triac, in any event, by about double, just to be safe.

i woulkd take switch off and rewire it. It is not a very difficult thing to do. As you take it apart just pay atention to where the speed control wires are running from and go from there. If it still dosent work than the switch is burnt out

Saw has no power.

Does the motor continue to run, but the arm stops? It sounds like the set screw on the motor shaft is loose. See the exploded view at this link. It's called out as # 97 http://www.dewaltservicenet.com/Products/DocumentView.aspx?productid=5682&typeId=3475&documentId=333

Saw blade broke. motor won't run after changing blade. reset wasn't tripped. lite still works so its not in the power cord.help! this is a craftsman 16 in. variable speed scroll saw not used very much....

It would have cost more to have Sears fix the saw than I paid for it, so I got my meter out and by checking the voltage drops across all of the electrical connections in the saw , I determined that the on / off switch was defective. This switch is the same switch used to turn the lite on and off, so I took the switch out of the lite and used it in the saw. I ordered a new switch for the lite and will install it when the new one comes. Thanks for your interest and help. fletcher1

Changing control switch

Sorry, but that is not going to work ,that motor is not compatible with that type switch. you would need a variable speed motor.Newer models have many more improvements, you should try one of them, much smoother cut. Good luck and please don't forget to rate this answer.Thanks.
