Question about Magic Chef Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

My oven doesn't heat up past 75 degrees and you can smell gas -- it was working if I turned it off and then back on it would begin to heat up correctly but now that doesn't seem to work anymore Is this something that can be easily fixed?

    Thanks Daniel

couple of questions -- what do I need to check the oven temp. sensor for 1100 ohms? Also, I'm no certain how I would check the control and door switch... and I was wondering how come you are saying it may be this even though I had not opened the oven door at all

Hi

The issue can either be a bad door switch/lock assembly or the oven temperature sensor (probe) itself that has gone bad. To solve this issue start by checking the oven temp. sensor for 1100 ohms, if the rating is more then that then check the control and door switch and replace the part that is bad. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

    Hi

I would suggest you to turn off the gas supply to the oven, and unplug it from power outlet. Now, use a multimeter and check the oven temperature sensor for 1100 ohms. Since you are saying that the oven does ignite and heat up, it could be due to the internal gas valve. The igniter circuit allows the gas valve to open, once it detects that the igniter is ready to "ignite" a gas flow. That is the reason why you could smell gas leak, it was allowing too much gas. Don't use the oven until you have a qualitifed tech come out and replace the valve. It is very dangerous for you to do it yourself. Call your gas company if you could smell gas leak even after turning off the supply to oven. Hope this helps... Please post back with model# if you need more information or if you are qualified to continue with this repair.

Our GE profile oven model JGsp31wet1ww oven will not heat up. When i set the oven to say 400 degrees, it just stays at 100 and never heats up. The broiler seems to work fine and the stove top gas burners...

pull out the racks and remove the bottom floor of the oven, turn it on bake,if the ignitor doesn't glow most likely it's bad,if it does glow and it doesn't ignite within 40 to 60 seconds the ignitor is bad.even though it glows doesn't mean it's good,it works by amps.it takes 3.2 amps.for a flat ignitor to open the gas valve and 2.5 amps for a round ignitor to open the gas valve.

Oven ingniter lights , smell gas but oven doesnt turn on

Hello- Ignitors may 'light' yet not reach proper resistance and temperature, causing improper gas flow past valve. If resistance is below 4 ohms, ignitor is bad. Part is 40-75$ at local app. parts store. Fairly easy to replace. Hope this helps. -Thanks- ED

Oven won't heat up at all.

broiler on top of oven?? if so it might have a second ignitor that is working. Most units now with gas have an electric ignitor to start gas ovens. What they do is send electric current through an electric "wire", when enough current is flowing through wire to open gas valve the wire is hot enough to ignite the gas flowing over it. When you turn on the oven look at the burner and after 1 imute or so you should be able to see an Orange glow in bottom of oven if not I'm sure its the ignitor, if glows then probably oven valve is bad. I'd guess ignitor because most oven makers use this ignitor to mantain a warming temp (around 100 degree's) so since your display doesnt register over inital "start" temp of 75, i'd bet ingitor not coming on at all

Oven would not light. I replaced the igniter and now it lights but it will not heat past 200 degrees. Is this the thermostat acting up or is this connected to the gas supply? Any suggestions??? My oven...

when you say now it lights. is just the ignitor lighting?or can you hear the gas flowing??? can you feel it heating at all?? should start at 100 degrees and climb up from there. no reason for it not to heat past 200 (unless set to Celsius which default setting of 350 =190degress) therefore will not heat past 200. and wont let you try to heat to 425 , that would be off the charts of Celsius conversion. sensor problem would eitherno t let stove come on or wouldnt stop from heating eitherway a code would come up in the display

Ge gas oven with electronic ignition

yea sounds like you have a bad oven ignitor, tell tale signs are not heating past warm, smells gas, too long to cook, popping noises while cooking. Id replace that ignitor. Although it might appear to "glow" not glowing strong enough

Oven Burner turns off during preheat

Mike, I think your problem is in the ignitor itself. Turn the gas off and see how many amps it's drawing during the bake mode. It needs between 3.2 and 3.6 amps to keep that valve open. Then ohm out the temperature probe, appox 1132ohms at room temp. You can see if your electronic control will go into a quick test by pressing and holding the cancel and broil buttons together for 3 seconds. First kill the power to the range and power back up before entering. When quick test appears you can check the bake relay by pressing bake. The relay should activate and 1 should be displayed. Same thing for convection bake except the fan should run too. Catriver...post back.
