Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

I have a Broan NuTone Model BN180, and it does not turn on when the outlet is plugged into the main floor. Pushing the manual power button on the unit outside works though. I tried pushing the reset button for the circuit in my washroom upstairs but that did not do anything either. The upstairs outlet works perfectly though. What should I do?

The outlet on the main floor still works though, I charged my phone through that outlet and used other appliances to test it too.

Hi,
Something happened either to the outlet on the main floor or to the wiring to the outlet on the main floor...
The first thing I would do is to replace the main floor outlet and then check the wiring if that don't work...the wiring trouble will be a bugger if that is the problem....

I would feel pretty certain that changing the outlet will fix your problem...

Next thing I would do is to verify the polarity of that outlet... the vacuum may be polarity sensitive... and many other things are not...seems to be the only other explanation...

Some of these units have had trouble with the motors and this is what causes them to shut off. NuTone has been pretty good about replacing them under warranty. 1-888-336-6151.

When I insert the hose into an vacumn outlet nothing happens. I tried pressing the reset button but still nothing.

First, make sure the unit is still plugged in.
2. Ensure the circuit breaker has not blown. This is easily checked by simply plugging another item into the outlet. If it has blown, flip it back on. If it continues to blow, there's a short in the cord or wiring of the vacuum.
3. Is it just one outlet, or all of them. If it's just one, it needs replaced.
4. Check the prongs on the hose, wands, and power nozzle to ensure they haven't shorted out.
5. Use a multimeter or continuity tester to check wires in the hose. Touch lead of the mm or ct to a prong on the hose, the other lead to the connector on the other end of the hose. Check both connectors. One should show continuity, the other will not. Repeat for other prong. If either prong shows zero, hose needs replaced.
6. Motor is burned out and needs replaced.
There are other problems that could cause this, so I recommend taking it to the Broan-NuTone dealer you got it from for them to check the vacuum for problems.

If it's just the one outlet, then there's probably a clog in the pipe between that outlet and the main pipe. You may be able to clear it by plugging the hose into a working outlet, placing other end to non-working outlet, and turning vacuum on. This may provide enough suction to **** out the clog.
If not, you'll probably need to use a mini plumber's snake to try to remove it.

Central vac will not turn off

You have a defective internal relay on the vac. Check for warranty coverage as this is a common occurrence on these big box store units.
If beyond warranty the relay should be a straight forward unit, miniature circuit board type plug in device. Find a Broan Nutone service center or take to vac pro shop for parts.

Vacuum working perfectly and everything stopped. Went to the utility room and found a plastic bag on top of the equipment. Tried the reset button, etc. nothing works.

sounds like a bad relay in the tank just a simple repair but should be done by a vacuum tech or electrician. Could be a motor is nothing is starting at all, but not as likely.

Old Nutone central vac system turned itself on and ran for hours.

if your unit normally turns on when you open the flap on the wall inlets then you should check each inlet for a switch or a button, sometimes those buttons can get loose and fall into the wall making the unit stay on. if your unit normally turns on when you plug the hose into the inlet then it would probably be a relay usually on the main tank itself try locating them and gently tapping on them with the rubber end of a screwdriver to see if you can un-stick them.

I have a Broan Nutone central vacuum. The power head seems to stall unless you lift up on the handle. I think I may need to change the belt but cannot find a place to purchase one to see if this is the...

If the power head is spinning when you lift up the handle then the head could be blocked with dirt. You may need to undo the floor head to see if the entire brush roll is clear as well as the main dirt channel/turbine wheel. Ensure that everything is clear before assuming it may be the belt that needs to be replaced.
You may well have to call or contact the main company who makes Broan Nutone models for them to send out / query the power head problem.
